국문 초록

이 논문은 1910～1920년대 대중에게 선호되었던 활자본 구소설의 ‘낭독성’을 규명하고, 당시 문화 계층별 언어관을 분석한 글이다. 활자본 구소설에서는 모음조화와 아래아(ㆍ)의 활용을 통해 음성 지향적 성격이 뚜렷하게 나타난다. 또한 동음과 동일한 의미 분절이 반복되면서 산문 문장에 리듬감이 강화된다. 낭독성이란 그저 소리 내 읽는 성독(聲讀)과는 다르다. 낭독자는 감정에 따라 어조를 바꾸고 표정을 지으며, 과장과 길게 읽기, 효과음 내기 등 모든 방식을 동원한다. 이런 방식은 무학자들이 당대 문화를 효과적으로 받아들이는 수단이었을 것이다. 20세기 초 문자를 읽고 내러티브를 인지하는 방식은 문화 계층에 따라 차이를 보인다. 한 계층은 문자를 ‘의미의 문자’로 인식했고 다른 한 계층은 ‘기억의 도구’로 인식했다. 양자의 언어관이 동시대 문학장(場)에 공존했다. 언어관의 차이는 독서의 취향과 수용 방식까지 영향을 미쳤다. 한쪽은 근대문학을 추구했고 다른 한쪽은 전통적 서사의 향유 방식을 지향하고 있었다. 근대소설의 정착과 궤를 같이하는 당시 지식인 독자들은 낭독 독서법을 버려야 할 유산으로 문제시했다. 그러나 낭독성이라는 문화코드를 감지하고 있었던 활자본 구소설 없이는 다수의 독자가 근대 출판시장으로 인입되지 못했을 것이다. 따라서 전통 서사의 에너지를 끌어오면서 지식인과 다른 집단의 언어관을 반영한 활자본 구소설의 낭독성은 보다 넓게 이해되어야 한다.

영문 초록

This thesis is an article that identifies the ‘sound reading’ of Printed Ancient Fictions favored by the public in the 1910s and 1920s and analyzes the language view of each cultural class at the time. Sound reading is different from just reading aloud. Readers change their tone according to their emotions, make facial expressions, exaggerate, read long, and make sound effects. By means of various methods of the sound reading it is very effective to make the listeners-readers understand and receive the stories, who did not read writing-letters. The method of reading writing-letters mingled with Chinese idioms/set-words and recognizing (long) stories in the early 20th century differs according to the cultural class. One class recognized the Chinese idioms/set-words as a ‘expression of deep meaning’ and the other as a ‘tool of memory’. These different recognitions coexisted. The difference in language views also influenced the taste and evaluation of reading methods. In the period of budding of modern novels, intellectual readers questioned the sound reading and criticized it as an inheritance of bad tradition that should be thrown away. It should be said that many readers would not have been able to access the modern publishing market without Printed Ancient Fiction as a cultural code of reading to connect modern reading. It needs to be positively understood readability of Printed Ancient Fictions. It reflects not only the language views of intellectuals and other non-intellectual groups making role of a reservoir of the energy of traditional narratives.
