국문 초록

본 연구는 영국 예술가 그레이슨 페리(Grayson Perry, 1960-)의 작품에 나타난 대중성에 관한 의의와 역할을 분석하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 페리는 사회적 이슈를 도자, 타피스트리 등에 밝은 색채와 드로잉, 패턴으로 표현한 작품으로 2003년 터너 프라이즈(Turner Prize)를 수상하며 독특한 작품세계를 구축하였다고 평가되고 있다. 최근 페리는 예술가의 책무가 많은 사람들이 예술을 향유하게 하는 것임을 주장하며 미술의 대중화를 실천하고 있다. 2012년 다큐멘터리 『All in the best possible taste』를 시작으로 대중과 소통하여 작품을 제작하고 이 과정을 BBC 채널에서 방영하였다. 주제를 탐구하는 과정에서 페리는 대중에게 아이디어와 이미지를 제공받고 이를 작품에 구현하기 위해 패스티쉬를 주요 기법으로 활용하였다. 2017년에는 크라우드소싱(Crowd-Sourcing)을 기반으로 불특정 다수의 아이디어를 수집하여 작품을 제작하기도 하는 등 다양한 시도를 하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 페리의 작업 배경을 고찰하고 대중성의 정의와 범주를 파악하였다. 대중화를 위한 전략으로 참여예술의 개념과 사례를 분석하고, 주된 표현기법인 패스티쉬의 이론적 배경을 근거로 작품을 분석한 뒤 대중적 의의를 고찰하였다. 그 결과 페리는 대중의 기여로 완성되는 참여예술을 통해 참여자에게 미적 경험을 선사하고, 자신의 특징적인 기법인 패스티쉬로 대중의 아이디어와 이미지를 섬세하게 구현하여 예술성과 대중성을 모두 확보하였다.

영문 초록

This study focused on the popularity of Grayson perry s work. Turner Prize-winning artist Grayson Perry (1960-) is a British contemporary artist and broadcaster. He is known for his ceramics, tapestries, and his observations of British contemporary society. Perry s vases have a classical form and are decorated with elaborate paintings and patterns, depicting the opposite of the attractive appearance of the subject. One of his campaigns is to broaden the audience for contemporary art. He has curated a number of documentary television programs and exhibitions since 2012 BBC documentary『All the best possible taste』. His documentary explores social issues in the U.K such as Brexit, class and masculinity. Perry engaged with the public in order to being part of an art project and made artwork at the last stage of documentary. He use Pastiche as combining and visualizing of people s ideas and images. Therefore, this paper is divided into two parts to analyze Perry’s work. Firstly it will examine upbringing and background of Perry and define his concept of popularity on the arts. Secondly, it will explore theoretical foundations of participatory art and pastiche as a tactics to widen the audience in of case TV programs and following artwork. As a result, this paper concluded that Perry’s participatory art gives people to contribute experience of involving in work of art and his Pastiche secure the distinguish his artistry.
