『라이프』 잡지(1899) 표지에 재현된 에드워드 켐벨의 흑인과 유대인 그리고 미국의 문화 정치학

국문 초록

본 연구는 1899년 미국의 대표 주간지 『라이프(Life)』의 표지를 통해 드러나는 미국의 당대 문화 정치학에 대해 논의한다. 표지는 『허클베리 핀의 모험(Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, 1885)』의 삽화로 유명한 에드워드 켐벨(Edward W. Kemble)이 그린 흑인 남성과 여성, 그리고 이들의 대화로 구성된다. 재건시대(Reconstruction; 1863-1877) 이후 20세기로의 전환을 맞이하던 당시 미국 사회는 흑인의 인권확대와 여성의 참정권을 위한 각종 시위, 그리고 다양한 이민자의 유입으로 인해 대혼란을 겪었다. 당시 미국 권력의 핵심을 구성하던 영국계 미국인은 다양한 인종, 민족, 문화권을 배경으로 하는 이민자 및 해방 노예를 계층별로 구별하고 이들에 대한 스테레오타입을 형성했다. 이에 본 연구는 흑인과 유대인에 주목하고, 이들이 미국 시민권을 취득하는 과정에서 미국 사회의 주류세력을 모방하거나 혹은 그들과 타협하는 과정이 잡지의 표지에 재현된 방식을 분석한다. 켐벨의 삽화 속 두 흑인은 고급스러운 복장을 하고 있는데, 이는 당시 이상적 미국 여성의 아이콘으로 여겨졌던 깁슨 걸(Gibson Girl) 문화를 모방한 듯 보인다. 하지만 이 둘의 동작과 방언은 그들이 결코 백인의 고급문화를 체화할 수 없음을 보여준다. 또 이 둘의 대화에서 유대인(Jew)과 보석(jewelry)의 영어 발음의 유사성으로 인한 말장난(pun)이 생성되는데, 이를 통해 유대인은 욕심이 많은 민족으로 묘사된다. 이는 유대인의 건축이 당시 미국 사회에 많은 영향을 주었음에도 불구하고 그들의 주류세력으로의 진입이 쉽지 않았음을 시사한다. 필자는 이러한 분석을 통해 잡지의 주요 구독자였던 영국계 미국인이 두 흑인으로 변장해 타인종에 대한 백인의 시각을 드러내고 있음을 주장하고, 『라이프』의 표지를 통해 흑인과 유대인을 향한 당대 문화 정치학이 어떻게 재현되고 있는지 논의한다.

영문 초록

This research discusses how cultural politics was expressed through the cover of the leading U.S. magazine Life in 1899 at the end of the nineteenth century. The cover shows a black man and woman and their dialogue created by Edward W. Kemble(1861-1933), who was well known for his illustrations for the novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn(1885). During the post-Reconstruction era, American society proved chaotic due to the rising struggles of disenfranchised African Americans, agitation of women’s rights, and influx of new immigrants. At that time, Anglo-Saxons grasped the core of power in the U.S. and stratified the statuses of African Americans and new immigrants, creating stereotypes and ethnic jokes about people from a diversity of races, ethnicities, and cultures. Hence this research focuses on how African Americans and Jews mimicked American high society or negotiated with the elites from the society in the process of obtaining American citizenship. The black man and woman in Kemble’s illustration appear to mimic the Gibson Girl culture that represented American progress at that time. But the gesture and dialectics of the two black figures demonstrate their inability to fully embody the white American-centric high culture. Their dialogue also produces a pun by linking the similar pronunciations of the words “Jew” and “jewelry,” with Jews being described as greedy people. Jews found it hard to assimilate into and penetrate the core of American society, though Jewish architecture influenced numerous construction projects in the U.S. Based on these analyses, I argue that the black subjects are camouflaged by the magazine’s white-centric subscribers and further demonstrate how the cover of Life reveals cultural politics of African Americans and Jews in the U.S. at the time.
