국문 초록

최근 가중되는 지구온난화와 코로나 19의 등장으로 인해 자연과 생명에 대한 반성과 관심이 미술작품에 널리 반영되고 있다. 인간과 생태계에 대한 미술은 2차 세계대전 이후 인간존재에 대한 물음과 생명의 중요성에 대한 인식에 기반 하여 추상적 표현으로 등장한 바 있다. 그 중에서도 동식물과 같은 유기체의 특성을 추상적인 방법으로 표현하거나 자연의 생명력을 시각 예술로 나타내고자 하는 경향이 1970년대 ‘바이오모픽 아트(Biomorphic Art) 라는 이름으로 정의되었다. 한편 한국현대도예에서도 유기적 형태 및 흙의 생명력을 표현한 추상 도자가 1970년대 전후 등장하여 1990년대까지 주요한 양식으로 자리 잡았다. 본 논문은 한국 추상도자의 등장 배경과 발전 양상을 분석하여 바이오모픽 미술과의 연관성을 규명하고자 한다. 특히 한국도자 전통과 장르가 가진 특수성과 질료적 특성이 어떻게 바이오모픽 개념으로 설명될 수 있는지에 주목하였다. 이를 위해 본 논문에서는 우선 미술사 안에서 바이오모픽 아트 개념이 어떠한 배경과 표현 양상으로 발전하는지를 살펴보았다. 다음으로, 한국현대도예보다 먼저 한국의 자연주의 정서를 추상회화로 그려냈던 한국추상미술의 이해를 통해 한국현대도예와 당시 미술계의 영향력 및 미적 정서의 연관성을 검증하고자 한다. 이로써 한국현대도예의 1세대 바이오모픽 경향의 작품 성격을 밝히고 시대적 상황에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 오늘날 일어나고 있는 바이오모픽 도예에 대한 다양한 창작과 해석의 기틀을 마련하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Artworks reflecting regrets and interest in the nature and life due to recent emergence of COVID-19 pandemic and aggravation of global warming are seen widely these days. The Biomorphic art is first defined in the 1970s as the tendency to express the characteristics of organisms such as plants and animals in abstract ways or to represent the vitality of nature as visual art. This art dealing with human, ecosystems, and life emerged after World War II as a question of human existence and awareness of the importance of life in form of abstract expression. Meanwhile in modern Korean ceramics, abstract ceramic works expressing the organic forms and vitality of soil appeared around the 1970s and settled as a major style until the 1990s. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the connection between biomorphic arts and the modern Korean ceramics by analyzing the background and development patterns of Korean ceramics. In particular, to discuss how the distinctiveness and material peculiarity of Korean ceramics traditions and genres can be explained in biomorphic concepts, the study reviewed how the concept and style of expression of biomorphic art developed in the art world along with its background. In addition, through the understanding of Korean abstract painting which depicted the naturalistic sentiment of Korea 20 years earlier than Korean modern ceramic, the thesis seeked to investigate the connection between the Korean contemporary ceramic and the influence of art circles and an aesthetic sense of those days. Ultimately, the study seek to reveal the first generation’s Korean modern ceramic biomorphic tendency and through periodical understanding, lay the foundation for various creation and interpretation of biomorphic ceramic of today.
