국문 초록

이 연구는 왼손으로 필기를 하는 ‘고집스런 왼손잡이’가 겪는 차별의 경험을 보여주고 그 교육적의미를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 연구자는 비판적 자문화기술지의 방법으로 왼손잡이 필기자로서 자신의 경험을 비판적으로 성찰하였다. 그 결과 첫째, 가정과 학교는 왼손잡이에 대한 관습적 편견을 바탕으로 왼손으로 글씨를 쓰는 것을 억압했고, 이에 ‘나’는 전략과 감내를 통해 교사들과의 갈등 속에서 왼손의 사용을 지켜냈다. 둘째, 학교는 ‘오른손으로’ 글씨 쓰는 방법만을 가르쳐주었기에 ‘나’는 오랜 기간 ‘왼손으로’ 글씨를 잘 쓰기 위한 방법을 모색하였고, 오른손잡이를 모방하기도 했지만 끝내 문제를 극복하지 못했다. 셋째, 오른손잡이를 중심으로 설계된 시험은 왼손 필기자의 답안지 작성을 어렵게 만들었고, 이로 인해 ‘나’는 시험 경쟁에서 불리한 위치에 놓이고 있었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 도출된 교육적 의미는 다음과 같다. 첫째, ‘글씨 쓰기’는 학습에 기초적이고 필수적인 능력으로 인정받는 공식적 교육과정이지만, ‘왼손으로 글씨 쓰기’는 영 교육과정으로 남아있다. 둘째, 오른손잡이를 기준으로 하는 지필 평가형식의 근본적인 방향성은 왼손잡이를 불리하게 만들 수 있는 잠재적 위험이며, 이는 한국의 경쟁적 교육 문화 속에서 왼손 필기를 포기하게 만들 가능성이 있다. 마지막으로, 왼손잡이에 대한인식은 긍정적으로 변화하고 있지만, 왼손잡이는 현실적인 불리함과 어려움을 겪으며 경계적소수자로 위치하고 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to show the discrimination experienced by a left-handed person in writing and to discuss its educational implications. For this purpose, the researcher’s experience as a left-handed person was critically reflected in the method of critical autobiography. The results of the study are as follows. Firstly, the home and school suppressed writing with the left hand based on the customary prejudice against left-handed people, so ‘I’ had to have strategy and perseverance to keep using the left hand in conflict with the teachers. Secondly, since school only taught students how to write with their right hand, ‘I’ looked for the way to write well with the left hand for a long time and imitated the way right-handed people do, but failed to overcome the problem. Thirdly, the exams designed mainly for right-handed people made it difficult for left-handed people to fill out the answer sheet, so ‘I’ was at a disadvantage in the competitions. The educational implications derived from the results are as follows. Firstly, ‘writing’ is in the formal curriculum recognized as a basic and essential ability for learning, but ‘writing with the left hand’ remains as the null curriculum. Secondly, the fundamental direction of the written test format based on right-handed people is a potential risk to put left-handed people at disadvantage and could lead to giving up left-handed writing in Korea’s competitive education culture. Lastly, although the perception of left-handed people is changing positively, left-handed people face realistic disadvantages and difficulties, and they are positioned as a borderline minority.
