『濁流』에 나타나는 초봉의 이미지 연구

국문 초록

본고는 채만식의 『濁流』 주인공 ‘초봉’의 인생행로에 따라 등장하는 고태수, 박제호, 장형보, 남승재 인물들과의 관계 속에서 표출되는 팜므 파탈과 팜므 프라질이미지 양상을 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 태수와의 결혼은 가족을 위해 희생하는 효녀 이미지 이면에 외적인 조건에 근간을 두고 있는 초봉의 결정에 의해 이루어지고 그녀에게 매혹 당한 남성들은 도덕적으로 추락과 함께 파국을 맞는 요인으로 작용하고 있다. 제호가 제안한 경제적 조건에 아버지의 친구이자, 유부남이란 사실에 대해서 도덕적 죄책감은 보이지 않고매혹적인 성을 이용하여 필요한 것들을 획득하는 팜므 파탈 이미지를 보인다. 딸을지키기 위한 모성은 살인이란 범죄로 재현되어 초봉의 희생은 극대화되고 그녀를향한 매혹과 위협에서 벗어나지 못한 형보는 비참한 죽음이란 파국을 맞는다. 모성을 위해 자신을 희생하는 초봉의 이미지는 승재에게 미래를 기약하는 요구를 하면서 그녀의 이미지는 굴절되고 만다. 그녀의 운명은 순응할 수밖에 없는 시대적·사회적 현실과 함께 스스로의 선택에기인하여 결정되는 모습을 보여준다. 신문연재소설이란 장르와 결합하여 독자 확보를 위해 비극적인 여성과 여성이 살인사건을 저지르는 범죄서사를 재현하고 있다.

영문 초록

This study aims to examine the aspects of femme fatale and femme fragile displayed in the life journey of Chobong, the main character in Chae Mansik s Turbid River ( ) in the course of her relationships with Go Taesu, Pak Jaeho, Jang Hyungbo and Nam Sungjae. While Chobong s marriage with Taesu shows the image of a filial girl who sacrifices herself for her family, under the surface the marriage takes place due to a decision based on external conditions, and the men who fall for her become a factor in her ultimate moral failing and downfall. She displays the image of a femme fatale by feeling no moral sense of guilt toward Jaeho s proposed economic conditions and the fact that he is her father s friend and already married, and, moreover, uses her attractiveness to obtain the things she needs. Chobong s downfall is maximized by the portrayal of how her maternal instinct, which aims to protect her daughter, is recreated in the form of murder; while Hyungbo, who is unable to remove himself from her charms and the threat she poses, meets a devastating end through a tragic death. The image of Chobong sacrificing herself for her motherhood ends up being distorted as she demands a promise of a future from Sungjae. Her fate shows both the time period s social realities that she is intractably bound to conform to, and displays decision-making based on her own choices. The novel, combined with being part of the newspaper serial novel genre, aims to attract readers by portraying a tragic woman and the crime narrative of a woman committing a murder.
