담론의 네 양식을 이용한 대학 글쓰기 교육

국문 초록

담론의 네 양식인 묘사, 서사, 설명, 논증은 국내 대학 글쓰기 교재에 ‘글쓰기나진술의 유형이나 방법’이라는 이름으로 거의 빠짐없이 등장한다. 이 네 양식을 활용한 글쓰기 교육이 형식주의나 간섭주의의 잔재라고 무수한 비판을 받았음에도아직도 교재의 한 자리를 굳건히 차지하고 있는 것은 어찌 보면 놀라운 일이다. 그런데 아쉽게도 네 양식의 끈질긴 생명력을 설명해 줄 자세한 이론적 논의는국내에서 찾아보기 어렵다. 이 글은 이 생명력의 원천을 확인하기 위해 그것의 뿌리까지 거슬러 올라가 보려 한다. 이 글은 먼저 네 양식 분류의 이론적 배경 및 탄생과 확산의 역사를 되짚어보았으며, 다음으로 네 양식을 활용한 글쓰기 교육에 제기된 비판 및 쇠퇴의 과정을따라가 보았다. 네 양식의 이론적 배경과 한계에 대한 깊은 이해는 기존 교재를무비판적으로 답습하는 관행을 넘게 하는 계기가 될 것이다. 결론적으로 필자는 담론의 네 양식이 학술적 글쓰기 교육에서는 여전히 무엇보다도 유효하다고 보았으며, 그 이유와 함께 학술적 글쓰기 교육에 네 양식을 더욱 효과적으로 활용하는하나의 방안을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

Four modes of discourse - description, narration, exposition, and argumentation - appear in almost every Korean university textbook under the name “글쓰기나 진술의 유형이나 방법(types or methods of writing or statement).” It is, in a sense, surprising to see that they still hold a place in the textbook even though the writing education using these modes has been criticized as a remnant of formalism or interventionism. Unfortunately, however, it is difficult to find detailed theoretical studies to explain the persistent vitality of the discourse modes. This article goes back to their roots to identify the sources of the vitality. I first examined the theoretical background of the classification into the four modes and traced the history of its birth and proliferation, followed by a review of the criticisms of the writing education using four modes and its declining process. A deeper understanding of the theoretical background and limitations of four modes will help break the practice of uncritically following the existing textbooks. Finally, I have argued that the four modes of discourse are still most effective in academic writing education, and further proposed a way to more effectively utilize them in this education.
