국문 초록

이선희 소설에서 핵심을 이루는 주제는 인물의 자율성과 주체성을 의미하는 ‘이동’과 ‘공간의 점유’이다. 가부장제는 여성들로 하여금 이동을 부자유스럽게 제약하기도 하지만 또한 그들이 안정된 중산층 가정의 주부들인 한에서는 주부로서의 자율성이 허락된 방을 부여하기도 한다. 이선희의 소설은 부부 중심의 스위트홈을 표상하는 방이라는 공간에 긍정적인 의미를 부여하면서도 동시에 그 공간에서 탈출하고자 하는 이중적 면모를 보이고 있는데 이러한 이중성은 가부장제가 갖고 있는 양면적 특징을 그대로 반영하고 있다. 이선희 소설의 여성인물들은 가부장에 대한 저항이 아닌 적극적인 공모 관계에 있으면서도 가부장제의 균열과 빈틈 사이로 여행과 이동의 간헐적 자유를 누리고자 한다. 즉 이선희 소설의 인물들에게 스위트홈에 대한 욕구와 여행에 대한 욕망은 ‘방’이라는 공간 안에 팽팽하게 공존해 있지만 스위트 홈이 위기에 처했을 때 이동과 여행의 욕망이 나타난다. 스위트 홈에 대한 희구는 가부장제 내에서 성취 가능한 현실적인 요구인 반면 여행에 대한 욕망은 성취하기 어렵거나 불가능한 욕망으로 이선희 소설의 더욱 본질적인 의미를 제공하고 있다. 대부분의 여행의 끝에 상상적으로 도착하게 되는 ‘바다’와 ‘섬’이라는 공간은 여성의 존재론적 멜랑콜리와 연결되어 있다. 바다는 이선희 소설에서 그 현실적 삶의 바깥 즉 허용되지 않고 도달할 수 없는 욕망과 이에 대한 우울을 표현하는 공간을 표상하는 공간이다. 이 우울감은 이선희의 실제 고향인 항구도시 원산과 같은 특정한 장소에 대한 장소애가 아니라 도달할 수 없는 곳 가부장제와 타협과 공모하는 순간, 포기해야 하는 먼 공간에 대한 그리움에서 발생한다. 이선희 소설에서 보이는 공간과 이동에 대한 자유로운 상상력은 남성 모더니스트들과 유사하지만 이들과는 달리, 본질적으로 어느 장소에도 뿌리내릴 수 없었던 가부장제에 의해 식민화된 여성적 모더니즘의 특성을 보여준다.

영문 초록

The main themes of Yi Sun-hee’s novel are “Movement,” which means the autonomy and self-reliance of the character, and “occupation of space.” The patriarchal system allows women to restrict free movement, but also grants them rooms just when women are housewives in stable middle-class families, where t hey are allowed autonomy as housewives. Lee Sunhee’s novel gives positive meaning to the space of “a room that represents a couple-centered Sweet Home,” but at the same time shows a dual aspect of wanting to escape from the space, which reflects the ambivalence of the patriarchal system. The female figures of Yi Sun-hee’s novel are in an active complicity, not resistance to patriarchs, but also want to enjoy intermittent freedom of travel and movement through cracks and gaps in the patriarchal system. For the characters in Yi Sunhee’s novel, the desire for Sweet Home and the desire for travel coexist tensely within the space of “rooms,” but the desire for movement and travel appears when “Sweet Home” is in crisis. While the aspiration for“Sweet Home”is an achievable realistic demand within the patriarchal system, the desire for travel offers the more essential meaning of Lee Sun-hee’s novel as a difficult or impossible desire to achieve. It gives the existential meaning of women in the space of ‘sea’ and ‘island’, which are imagined to arrive at the end of most trips. The sea is a space in Yi’s novel that represents a space outside of that realistic life: a space that expresses an unacceptable and unreachable sexual desire and depression about it. This depression arises from the longing for the distant space that Yi Sunhee has to give up the moment she conspires with a compromise with the unattainable patriarchal system, rather than a place-loving for a particular place like the port city of Wonsan, her real hometown. The free imagination of space and movement seen in Yi Sun-hee’s novel is similar to that of male modernists, but unlike them, the characteristics of a female modernist who was essentially unable to take root in any place.
