서사전략으로서 오독(誤讀)의 효과와 의의

국문 초록

이 글은 김영하의 장편소설 『살인자의 기억법』을 대상으로 서사전략으로서 오독(誤讀)이 갖는 효과와 의의를 분석하고 있다. 추리소설은 ‘범죄의 이야기’를 밝혀내기 위한 ‘조사의 이야기’이자 독자와 작가 사이의 공정한 게임을 위해 존재하는 놀이 규칙이 장르적 관습으로 굳어진 장르다. 이 과정에서 구체적인 서사적 요소는 놀이를 성립시키기 위해 어느 정도 무시되는 측면이 있다. 『살인자의 기억법』은 추리소설의 도식에 들어맞는 것처럼 보이지만, 추리소설의 구성 요소를 제대로 갖추고 있지 않은 작품이다. 소설 속에 존재하는 인물과 사건, 수수께끼는 주인공의 망상에 지나지 않는다. 그러나 이러한 사실은 독자가 오독을 지속하는 동안에는 밝혀지지 않는다. 이 과정에서 추리소설의 장르적 관습은 본래의 용도와는 달리 소설이 추리소설로서 성립하지 않는다는 것을 숨기기 위하여 활용되었다. 주인공의 자기과시적인 성격과 범인에 가까운 행동은 탐정의 성품과 행동으로 오인되며, 흥미 본위의 폭력적인 행동 역시 수사행위와 동일시된다. 또한 알츠하이머라는 병을 통해 주인공의 모순되는 진술을 향한 의심을 무마시키고 그를 보완할 수 있는 근거를 제시했다. 추리소설을 기대한 독자는 문제의식을 갖고 주어진 수수께끼를 풀이하며, 작가와 공정한 게임을 한다는 착각 속에서 스스로 게임의 결함을 보완하며 독서를 진행하게 된다. 오독(誤讀)을 지속하는 독자는 『살인자의 기억법』의 결말부의 반전에 이르러서야 자신의 기대가 환상이었다는 것을 깨닫고, 자신이 믿어오던 규칙 자체에 배신당하는 경험을 통해 소설의 주인공과 마찬가지로 세계의 붕괴를 경험하게 된다. 이 과정에서 장르적 관습은 낯선 대상이 되며 독자와 소설의 주인공 사이의 정서적 유대 역시 끊어진다. 오독(誤讀)은 독자가 결말까지 소설을 읽게 하는 원동력이 되어줄 뿐만 아니라, 독자의 기대를 무너트림으로써 범죄 사건을 게임으로 즐겨온 독자의 욕망을 되돌아보게 해주는 역할을 수행한다. 이처럼 『살인자의 기억법』에서 오독(誤讀)은 작품의 주제를 효과적으로 나타내고 독자에게 윤리적인 질문을 던지기 위한 수단으로 활용된다.

영문 초록

This article analyzes the effects and significance of misreading as an epic strategy on Kim Young-ha’s novel Memoir of a murderer, a mystery novel is a ‘detective story’ to uncover the ‘crime story.’ It is also a genre in which play rules for fair games are cemented by genre conventions. In this process, specific narrative elements are somewhat ignored to establish play. Memoir of a murderer is a work that seems to fit the schematics of mystery novels, but is not properly equipped with the elements of mystery novels. The characters, events and riddles that exist in the novel are nothing more than delusions of the protagonist. However, this fact is not revealed while the reader continues to misread. Next, this article analyzes techniques used to induce readers to misread in the Memoir of a murderer in relation to the readers’ reading experience of a genre novel contradictory. Kim Young-ha used readers’ expectations of the genre to make the reader misread Memoir of a murderer as a mystery novel. In his inducing process, the genre conventions of mystery novels was used to hide the truth. The protagonist’s self-proud character and behavior close to the perpetrator are mistaken for the detective’s personality and behavior, and the violent behavior based on interest is also equated with the act of investigation. Alzheimer’s disease was used to allay doubts about the protagonist’s contradictory statements. The reader, expecting a mystery novel, has a sense of problem and solves the mystery under the illusion of playing fair game with the writer while fixing deficiencies of the game himself and reads the book. In the final part, the effects and significance of misreading were analyzed. The misread reader realizes that his expectation was an illusion at the end of the Memoir of a murderer, they experience the collapse of their world, just like the protagonist of the novel, via the experience of being betrayed by the rules they have been believing in. In this cognitive process, genre conventions become unfamiliar objects. Misreading not only serves as a driving force for the reader and make him read novels until the end, but also as a reminder of the reader’s desires by destroying the reader’s expectations. In this Memoir of a murderer, misreading was used as a means to effectively represent the subject of the work and to ask ethical questions to the reader.
