백신애 소설에 나타난 접경의 양상과 교차성

국문 초록

이 논문은 백신애 소설에 나타난 모순적이고 양가적인 특성을 교차성의 관점에서 새롭게 읽어보고자 하였다. 교차성의 관점에서는 이질적이고 유동적인 다수의 범주가, 예를 들어 민족, 젠더, 계급, 인종의 범주가 주체의 정체성을 구성하는 데 있어 상호관계적으로 또 중층으로 작용하면서 주체를 불안하게 만들기도 하고 새로운 인식의 계기를 창출하기도 한다. 백신애의 소설에서 몸의 이동과 더불어 접경의 창출이 두드러지게 나타나는 작품은 ｢꺼래이｣와 ｢혼명에서｣이다. ｢꺼래이｣의 경우, ‘나’(순이)의 강제이동은 길, 선상, 흰 벽돌집 등의 경계공간을 창출하고 여기서 주체의 정체성은 이질적인 것들의 충돌에 의해 다변화한다. 특히 민족, 인종, 젠더, 계급, 이념 등의 범주가 충층적으로 교차되는 양상이 ‘나’와 주변인과의 관계에서 적절히 드러난다. 나아가 유동적 정체성 속에서 ‘나’는 끝내 생존의지를 유지하면서 억압의 복잡성과 저항의 역동성을 보여준다. ｢혼명에서｣의 ‘나’는 가족과 이념, 삶과 죽음 혹은 신념의 교차성 위에 놓여 있다. 이를 이동의 접경공간인 여행과 기차, 객실에서 수행되는 대화를 통해 보여주고 있는데, 여기서 ‘나’는 나라는 인간의 정의를 무엇이라 내려야 하는지를 고민한다. 결국 ‘의기’로 대표되는 그의 신념을 수용하고자 하나, 이 또한 그의 죽음으로 흔들리는 양상을 보여준다. 백신애 소설이 보여준 유동하는 행위주체는 불안정하기에 소설적 완성도에 있어 미흡한 것으로 평가되기도 한다. 그러나 주체의 정체성이란 것이 중층의 범주에 의해 끊임없이 흔들리는 것이라면 그 유동성을 전면적으로 문제삼는 것 자체가 유의미하며, 소수자의 다양한 경험을 경청하는 기회를 제공한다는 점에서 백신애 소설의 의의를 확장할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper attempted to read the contradictory and ambivalent characteristics of the novels of Baek Sinae from the perspective of intersectionality. From the point of view of intersectionality, a number of heterogeneous and fluid categories, such as ethnic, gender, class, and race categories, act as an interrelationship and middle layer in constructing the identity of the subject, making the subject unstable. It also creates a new opportunity for awareness. In Baek Sinae’s novel, the works in which the movement of the body and the creation of the border are prominent are “Kkeoraei” and “Honmyeongeseo’. In the case of “Kkeoraei”, the forced movement of “I” (Soon Yi) creates boundary spaces such as roads, ships, and white brick houses, where the identity of the subject diversifies by the collision of disparate things. In particular, the aspect in which the categories such as ethnicity, race, gender, class, and ideology intersect in depth is properly revealed in the relationship between ‘I’ and the neighbors. Furthermore, in a fluid identity, ‘I’ shows the complexity of oppression and the dynamics of resistance while maintaining the will to survive. The “I” of “Honmyeongeseo” lies on the intersection of family and ideology or belief. This is illustrated through conversations carried out in travel, trains, and cabins, which are transboundary spaces of movement. Here, ‘I’ is thinking about what to define for herself. In the end, she wants to accept his conviction, represented by the “spirit of will,” but this also shows a wavering pattern from his death. Baek Sinae’s novels show that the moving subject is unstable, and is often regarded as insufficient in novel completeness. However, if the identity of the subject is constantly shaken by the middle-class category, it is meaningful to consider the liquidity as a whole, and it can expand the significance of novels in Baek Sinae in that it provides an opportunity to listen to various experiences of minorities.
