『은세계』의 정치성과 인민의 ‘대표/재현’이라는 문제

국문 초록

본고는 이인직의 『은세계』를 당대의 역사적 맥락 안에서 정치적 관점으로 재해석하고자 한다. 『은세계』가 창작되고, ‘정치소설’로 선전되고, 신연극으로 공연되고, 마침내 단행본으로 출간되었던 1908년은 초기 부르주아의 계급적 지향이 식민지적 ‘통치’로 편입되었던 역사적 변곡점에 해당한다. 또한 1908년은 보호국 체제에서 ‘자강’을 통한 독립이라는 기치 아래 연합해있던 여러 정치 세력들이 실질적 식민지로의 전락이라는 역사적 조건 속에서 다양한 정치노선들로 분기하고 대립했던 시점이기도 하다. 1908년 6월 『대한매일신보』에 게재된 ‘정치소설 은세계’ 광고는, 구성해야할 ‘현실’을 둘러싼 정치적 갈등이 ‘정치소설’ 용법을 둘러싼 문학장의 갈등과 연동되고 있었음을 보여준다.(2장) 이러한 대립의 한가운데에서 『은세계』는 강렬한 반봉건적 민권의식을 표방하는 동시에 인민의 생명 및 재산 보호에 실패한 국가의 몰락을 역사의 필연성으로 제시하고 있다.(3장) 인민의 생명과 재산 보호라는 ‘민권’ 수호를 위해 식민 통치의 불가피함을 주장했던 이인직의 사상은 친일/민족의 이분법이 아니라 민권사상의 내재적 관점에서 비판될 필요가 있다. 텍스트는 인민 일반의 권리를 ‘대표’하여 발언하는 중심인물들(최병도, 옥남)과 ‘아우성’으로만 표현되는 다중적 인민 사이의 괴리를 드러낸다. 근대 초기 부르주아의 반봉건적 진보성이 점차 인민 일반과 괴리되면서 식민 통치의 옹호로 귀결되었던 역사의 추이는 서사 속에서 최병도와 옥남이의 비극과 희극으로 ‘반복’되었다.

영문 초록

This article reinterprets Injik Yi’s The Silvery World in the historical contexts of 1907 and 1908. Japan-Korea Treaty of 1907 brought the internal government Korea fully under the control of Japan and frustrated political vision of independence through self-strengthening movement under the protectorate system. As a result, the movement diverged into diverse and, sometimes, confrontational political factions, which were related to literary confro- ntations over desirable ‘novel.’ In the midst of these political and literary confrontations, The Silvery World narrativized the necessity of colonization of Korea by focusing on corruption and incompetence of the traditional government of Korea. Yi’s political thoughts reflected people’s right movement of the time, which prioritized protection of people’s life and property to sovereignty of the feudal state. The limitation of the people’s right movements at that time was that intellectuals and men of property class who ‘represented’ people’s rights had a huge gap from people as the multitude. The Silvery World revealed the increasing gap between representation of people and people themselves over time by ‘repeating’ two narratives of the father(Byeung-do) and the son(Ok-nam), once as a tragedy and then as a comedy.
