조선후기 통신사행록 속에 나타난 전쟁의 상흔, 그리고 부산

국문 초록

부산은 임진왜란, 또 통신사와 밀접하게 연결되어 있다. 부산은 임진왜란 최초의 전투가 벌어진 곳이자 7년 간 일본군의 병참기지 역할을 했기에 전쟁의 흔적을 그대로 간직하고 있는 공간이었다. 아울러 부산은 통신사 노정의 종착지이자 일본으로 떠나는 출발지였다. 그래서 조선후기 통신사행록 속에는 부산의 다양한 모습이 기록되어 있다. 그 중 하나는 임진왜란에 대한 기억이다. 통신사의 국내노정은 임진왜란 당시 일본군의 북상 경로와 비슷하였기 때문에 통신사행록에는 노정 중에 목도하게 된 전란의 흔적이 고스란히 기록되어 있다. 통신사행원들은 일본에 대한 적개심을 애써 누르며 복명사신으로서의 임무를 다하려고 했지만 부산으로 내려오는 국내 노정 중에, 또 부산 체류기간 동안 곳곳에 남아있던 임진왜란의 흔적을 직접 보았고 전쟁으로 야기된 경제적 열악함을 몸소 겪었다. 그러한 경험은 일본군이 퇴각하는 것에서 전쟁이 끝나지 않았음을, 또 수십 년이 지난 시점까지 그 상처가 아물지 않았음을 깨닫게 하였다. 조선후기 통신사행록에는 임진왜란의 흔적이 남아있는 한 전쟁과 그로 인한 고통이 계속될 수밖에 없다는 점이 뚜렷하게 기록되어 있다. 하지만 시간이 흐를수록 전쟁의 흔적은 점점 옅어지게 되었다. 대신 임진왜란의 참상과 고통을 기억할 수 있는 공간이 국가 혹은 지방 주도로 조성되었다. 더 이상 전란의 흔적을 찾아볼 수 없는 시점에 일본으로 파견된 통신사행원들은 동래의 충렬사, 부산진성과 영가대의 기념비 등을 통해 조국을 위해 목숨을 바친 조상들의 충성심과 절개를 내면화하고 조선에 구원병을 보낸 명나라를 기념하였다. 그리고 그 과정에서 임진왜란을 기억하는 한편 일본에 대한 경각심을 되새겼다.

영문 초록

Busan is closely connected to Japanese invasion (of Korea in 1592) and Joseon Tongsinsa(Korean missions to Japan). It was the place where the first battle of Japanese invasion took place and served as a logistical base of the Japanese military for seven years. So, it was a space that kept the traces of war. Besides, Busan was the destination of Joseon Tongsinsa s journey and point of departure to Japan. Therefore, various views of Busan was expressed in the Record of Joseon Tongsinsa in the late Joseon Dynasty. One of them is a record of the Japanese invasion. Since the route of Joseon Tongsinsa s journey within the country was similar to the marching-north route of the Japanese army at the time of the Japanese invasion, the traces of the war that was witnessed during the journey were recorded in the Record of Joseon Tongsinsa. Members of Joseon Tongsinsa tried to fulfill their duties as envoys submitting a report of King, suppressing the hostility to Japan, but they had to witness the traces of Japanese invasion and experience the economic inferiority caused by the war, during their journey within the country to Busan, and during their stay in Busan. Such experiences made them realize that the war was not over from the retreat of the Japanese army, and that the scar of war did not die away until the decades passed. The Record of Joseon Tongsinsa in the late Joseon Dynasty clearly states that the war and the suffering caused by it cannot help going on forever as long as there are traces of the Japanese invasion However, as time went by, the traces of war gradually faded, and a space to remember the horrors and sufferings of the Japanese invasion was alternatively created by the state or provincial government. Members of Joseon Tongsinsa who were dispatched to Japan, at the time when no traces of war could be found, internalized the loyalty and incision of the ancestors who devoted their lives to their country and commemorated the Ming Dynasty which sent reinforcement for Joseon, through the monuments of Dongrae s Chungryulsa Temple, Busan Jinseong and Yeonggadae. In the process, they tried to remember the Japanese invasion and arouse attention to Japan.
