요산 김정한 소설의 서술 문제

국문 초록

요산 김정한의 소설에 대해서는 그 동안 여러 가지 관점으로 논의가 진행되어 왔지만 ‘서술’ 문제에 대해서는 논의가 극히 제한되어 있고 그 결과 그의 소설이 지닌 서술적 특징과 그 효과가 제대로 밝혀져 있지 않다. 사건은 전달되지 않고 서술되지 않으면 서사화 될 수 없다. 그리고 서사는 반드시 다른 시공간으로 전달되어야만 의미를 갖는다. 서사의 전달은 물론 텍스트 안의 문제이기도 하지만 그것을 넘어서는 문제이기도 하다. 이런 점에서 이 글에서는 목격자, 전달자, 서술자의 개념으로 김정한의 작품이 어떤 방식으로 전달되는지를 풀어보려 했다. 김정한이 집중적으로 관심을 보내고 있는 인물들은 교육받지 못하고 아무런 전달 수단도 가지지 못한 채 최하층의 삶을 살아가고 있다. 그리고 그들은 다른 시공간으로 이동하지 않고 제한된 공간에서 삶을 유지하고 있는 존재이기도 하다. 그래서 이들의 이야기가 다른 시공간으로 전달되기 위해서는 전달자의 자격까지 갖춘 전지적 서술자가 필요하게 된다. 김정한의 소설에서 전지적 서술자가 압도적 비중을 차지하는 것은 이 때문이라 할 수 있다. 김정한 소설의 전지적 서술자는 무자비한 폭력에 무방비로 노출된 하층의 사람들의 고통에 공감하며 연민의 감정을 지니고 있는 존재이다. 전지적 서술자는 아무런 표현 수단과 전달 매체를 가지지 못한 사람들이 겪는 아픔을 강한 도덕성으로 무장한 채 전달자의 역할까지 수행하고 있다. 그렇지만 서술자가 지닌 강한 도덕성은 풍자의 가능성을 차단하는 아쉬움을 남기기도 했고, 초월적 위치에 서 있는 이야기꾼으로서의 성격은 사건을 자주 요약함으로써 장편 창작에 어려움을 주기도 했다. 상대적으로 많지 않은 1인칭 서술자는 대부분 자신의 이야기가 아니라 다른 사람의 이야기를 전달한다는 점에서 전지적 서술자와 친연성을 지니고 있다. 1인칭 서술자는 직접 체험 또는 목격하거나 다른 경로를 통해 얻은 정보를 다시 가공하여 이 이야기를 다른 시공간으로 이동시킨다. 그리고 1인칭 서술자가 작가 등의 지식인으로 설정되어 있는 것은 이야기꾼의 성격을 지녔던 전지적 서술자의 모습과 대응된다고 할 수 있다. 1인칭 서술자에게도 최하층의 삶을 사는 인물들의 이야기를 전달해야 하는 의무가 주어져 있고 이 사실을 1인칭 서술자 역시 잘 알고 있다. 이 점에서 1인칭 서술자는 전지적 서술자의 모습과 일정 부분 겹치기도 하는 것이 김정한 소설의 서술자(또는 서술 상황)가 지닌 특징이라 할 수 있을 듯하다.

영문 초록

Although the discussion on Yosan Kim Jeong-han s novels has been studied from various perspectives, the issue of ‘narration’ is extremely rare. As a result the narrative characteristics and effects of his novels have not been revealed well. If events are not conveyed and described they cannot be narrativeized. Moreover narratives have meaning only when they are conveyed to other time and space. Of course it is not only within a matter of the text but beyond it. In this respect, this paper tried to solve how Kim Jung-han s works are delivered with the concept of witnesses, transmitters, and narrators. The characters Kim Jung-han is concentrating on are living the lowermost life without being educated and having any means of transmission. Furthermore they are not moving to other time and space and they stay in a limited space. Therefore a omniscient narrator with the qualified transmitter is needed in order for their story to be delivered to other time and space. This is why the omniscient narrator takes the overwhelming weight in Kim Jeong-han s novels. The omniscient narrator of Kim Jeong-han s novels is a being who has compassion and sympathy for the suffering of the lower class exposed to ruthless violence without being protected. The omniscient narrator is carrying out the role of the transmitter with strong morality in the pain of those who have no expression means and transmission medium. However the strong morality of the narrator left a regret to block the possibility of satire and made it difficult to create a long work by summarizing the events with the character of a storyteller standing in a transcendental position. The first person narrators, which comparatively few in Kim s novels, have a close relationship with the omniscient narrator in that they convey the others’ stories rather than their own. The first person narrator reprocesses the information obtained with direct experience or witness or through other routes and moves the story to another space and time. In addition the fact that the first person narrator is set as an intellectual such as a writer corresponds to the feature of a omniscient narrator who had the character of a storyteller. The first person narrator is also obliged to convey the stories of the characters living in the lowermost life, and the first person narrator knows this fact well. The point that the first person narrator overlaps with the appearance of the omnipresent narrator in some parts seems the characteristic of the narrator (or narrative situation) of Kim Jung-han s novels.
