한글장편소설 남성인물의 ‘공감’에 대하여

국문 초록

한글장편소설은 상층 여성의 고충이 잘 드러나 있는 장르이다. 이때 여성들의 고충은 비슷한 처지의 여성에 의해 공감되고 위로되는 양상을 보이는 경우가 많은데, 여성의 내적 고통을 누구보다도 잘 이해하고 공감하는 남성인물이 있어 흥미롭다. 본고는 한글장편소설의 남성 중심인물의 공감력에 대해 논의하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 군자형 인물과 호방형 인물의 유형적 특징, 특히 감성의 측면에 집중하여 그들이 타인의 감성에 대해 어떤 인식과 이해를 지니고 있으며 얼마나 공감하는지의 문제에 초점을 맞춰 살피고자 한다. 이러한 논의를 진행하는 가운데 『명행정의록』의 등장인물 ‘위천유’가 여성인물에게 공감하는 상황에 주목하게 될 것이다. 군자형 인물은 스스로에게 부여하는 도덕적 기준, 감정 절제의 기준이 높아, 타인의 부적절한 욕망과 감정에 대해서는 부정(否定)하고 혐오하여 이해하려 하지 않는다. 그리하여 자신의 감정뿐만 아니라 타인의 감정을 소외시키는 경향이 있다. 반면 호방형 인물은 감정을 표출하고 추구하는 데 적극적이지만 갈등 상황에서는 자신의 감정에만 지나치게 몰입하는 자기중심성이 강하기 때문에 상대를 이해하려는 노력을 하지 않는다. 때문에 특히 갈등 대상이 되는 여성인물에게 질곡을 부여하는 역할을 한다. 군자형, 호방형 인물 모두 자신과 마주하는 타자의 감성 작용에 대체로 무심하다 할 수 있다. 그런데 『명행정의록』의 군자형 인물 위천유는 공감능력, 특히 인지적 공감능력이 뛰어나 여성인물의 고통을 누구보다도 가장 잘 이해하고 공감한다. 그는 원치 않은 혼인 상황에서 장인에 대한 불만을 아내에게 옮기는 일 없이, 오히려 곤란한 상황에 괴로워하는 아내 문창군주를 위로하고, 지속적인 정신적 외상[trauma]에 시달리다 마비 증세를 겪는 제수(弟嫂) 양현강의 내면을 곡진히 이해하며 그를 치유한다. 여성의 고통이 여성이 아닌 남성에 의해 이해되고 공감된 지점은 특기할 만한데, 이처럼 여성/약자에게 공감하는 남성인물의 등장은, 약자들의 문제에 대한 공감 주체와 공감 영역의 확대를 가져왔다는 데서 의미가 깊다.

영문 초록

The Korean classical long novel is the genre which the problem to the upper layer woman is well revealed. At this time, problems are often sympathized and comforted by women in similar situations. However, it is interesting that there are male characters who understand and empathize with women s inner suffering better than anyone else. This paper aims to consider on the male character ‘Wicheonyu’ of Myeonghaengjeonguirok in which the sympathy ability is excellent. The male protagonist of the Korean classical long novel is classified into the confucian gentlemen type characters and the manly and broad minded characters. As to the confucian gentlemen type characters, the standard about the emotion control is high. So this character dislikes others inappropriate desires and emotions and does not try to understand them. On the other hand, the manly and broad minded characters is active in expressing its own feeling and pursuing. In conflict situations, they are so immersed in themselves that they cannot empathize with their opponents. For this reason, it plays a role in giving pain to female characters who are in conflict. As such, both types of characters do not understand the other s emotional effects properly. However, ‘Wicheonyu’, the confucian gentlemen type characters of Myeonghaengjeonguirok, has excellent empathy, especially cognitive empathy, and understands and empathizes with the pain of female characters better than anyone else. Even in an unmarried marriage, he comforts his wife, Moonchang, who is troubled by a difficult situation, without sending his wife a complaint of father-in-law. And he heals Yanghyeongang by understanding the inside of Yanghyeongang, who suffers from paralysis and suffers from constant trauma. The point where women s sufferings are understood and empathized by men, not women, is remarkable, and the sympathetic ability of Wicheonyu is very unique.
