이병주의 중·단편소설을 통해 바라본 ‘회색의 사상’

국문 초록

이병주는 그동안 ‘회색의 사상’을 가진 작가라는 모호한 표현으로 평가·이해되어왔다. 본고의 목적은 이병주의 소설 속에 나타나는 법과 제도에 대한 고찰을 통해 이병주의 ‘회색의 사상’을 한층 더 구체화하는 것이다. 본고에서 제시된 이병주의 소설 텍스트는 ｢소설·알렉산드리아｣, ｢거년의 곡｣, ｢그 테러리스트를 위한 만사｣, ｢허망의 정열｣의 네 가지 중·단편 소설이다. 이병주의 소설들은 인위적인 제도가 타인과의 ‘대화의 장’을 생산한다는 점에서 높이 평가한 반면, 그것이 개체성을 억압하는 방향으로 작동하는 것을 경계한다. 이를 통해 볼 때, 기회주의적이라고 폄하된 이병주의 ‘중립’과 ‘회색의 사상’은 하나의 적극적인 ‘입장’이라고 볼 수 있다. 중·단편 소설을 통해 나타나는 이병주의 ‘회색의 사상’은 ‘법과 제도에 대한 제한적 신뢰’와 ‘대화 가능성 자체에 대한 긍정’에 연결되어 있다고 할 수 있다. 소설 속 인물들이 담지한 ‘회색의 사상’은 당대에 적극적으로 선택하기 위험했던 하나의 ‘입장’이며, 개인의 주체성을 발휘하기 위한 하나의 판단 ‘기준’이다. 이러한 ‘회색의 사상’은 법의 한계를 인식한 상태에서 그 필요성을 동시에 인식할 때, 제대로 발휘될 수 있다. 따라서, ‘법과 제도’가 어떠한 방식으로 이병주의 작품 속에서 형상화되고 있는지에 대한 분석은 이병주의 ‘회색의 사상’을 밝히는 데 주요한 키가 되며, 이는 이병주 작품세계 전체를 밝히는 데 있어 중요한 시각이라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Studies about Lee Byung-joo’s novels focused on the way he expressed his “gray thought”; however, rarely did those studies reflect how the system of law enforcement and social rules are expressed in his works. This study reinstates Lee’s gray thought with the emphasis on how that system is reflected in four of his novels, “Novel Alexandria,” “Mourning of Geoneon,” “Vanity of Passion,” and “An Article Written in Sorrow to the Deceased for the Terrorist.” Lee has an ambivalent attitude towards the system of law enforcement and social rules: he doubts its necessity while he stresses it at the same time. His attitude is embodied in various plots and characters. His trust on the system relies on its power to ensure people’s freedom and equality while he warns that we should keep it from suppressing people. Lee suggests the agora where people gather and share ideas as anti-violent way to overcome the law and system’s limits. In his works, the violence of that social system as well as resistance against it (counter-resistance) appear; they prevent from opening the place where people share ideas. However, Lee does not object to that social system. Rather, he argues that place can be arranged and sustained only by the system of law enforcement and social rule so that it secures individuality of people. Consequently, this study contributes to the idea that Lee’s gray thinking not only means “becoming neutral” but also strengthens the important of morality.
