유치진의 시나리오 작업을 통해 보는 반공과 냉전

국문 초록

본고는 시나리오 ｢철조망｣(1953)을 중심으로 1950년대 유치진의 시나리오 작업을 개괄하며, 냉전문화 지형 속 작가의 영화 활동을 논의하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 유치진이 본격적 시나리오 작업을 시작한 것은 한국전쟁 이후이며, 그의 영화 관련 활동도 주로 1950년대에 한정되어 있다. 특히 이 시기는 작가로서 희곡보다 시나리오 창작에 열중했던 기간이자, 이승만 정권의 방향성 및 냉전구도 속 서구 문화의 소개와 관련하여 예술의 정치화에 더욱 적극적으로 나섰던 때이다. 시나리오 ｢철조망｣의 경우 전후 유치진 시나리오 작업의 시발점에 있는 작품이며, 정치와 직결된 유치진의 연예 활동의 방향성을 제시해주는 텍스트이다. 또한 UN과 협의되지 않은 이승만의 단독적인 포로석방 결정 직후 발표된 텍스트라는 점에서 해당 사안과 관련한 동시대성을 갖고 있다는 점에서 주목할 수 있다. 본고의 경우 『동랑유치진전집』에 실린 시나리오가 유치진의 것이 아닌 각색자의 텍스트임을 지적하고, 자서전에서 자신의 연극 활동을 ‘탈정치화’시켰던 작가의 이력이 얼마나 정치적인 것이었는지를 그의 시나리오를 통해 논하고자 한다. 특히 교조주의와 프로파간다라는 측면에 주목해 유치진의 극작세계 속에서 ｢철조망｣이 갖는 위치에 대해 설명하며, 4.19 전후 영화 ｢철조망｣의 복잡다단한 검열과정을 통해 전쟁과 혁명 사이 유치진의 위치에 대해 논하는 것을 궁극적인 목적으로 한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to summarize Yu Chi-jin’s scenario work in the 1950s focusing on the scenario titled Entanglements(1953), and to discuss the author’s film activity in the middle of the cold-war culture formation. What Yu Chi-jin started a full-out scenario work is after the Korean War. Even his activity related to a movie is limited mainly to the 1950s. Especially, this period is both the one that he had been intent on creating a scenario rather than a play as an author, and the time when he had more positively launched into the politicization of art in relation to introducing western culture amidst the directivity and the cold-war structure in the Syngman Rhee regime. The scenario Entanglements is a work that is at the starting point of Yu Chi-jin’s scenario work before and after the war, and is a text that suggests directivity in Yu Chi-jin’s entertainment activity directly linked to politics. Also, in a regard of the text that was unveiled right after Syngman Rhee s unilateral determination of prisoner release, which was not consulted with UN, it may be noted in the respect of having contemporary characteristic relevant to the corresponding matter. This study aims to point out that the scenario, which was reported in Dongrang-Yuchijin-Jeonjip(東朗柳致鎭全集), is an adaptor’s text, not the one of Yu Chi-jin, and to discuss how political it was a writer’s background, which had ‘de-politicized’ own theatrical activity in the autobiography through his scenario. The ultimate objective is to explain about the position that Entanglements has in Yu Chi-jin’s playwriting world with paying particular attention to the aspect dubbed doctrinairism and propaganda, and to discuss about Yu Chi-jin’s position between war and revolution through the complicated censorship process of Entanglements as the movie before and after the April 19 Revolution.
