국문 초록

이 글에서는 식민지 시기 문학 작품에 나타난 개별 이동의 궤적에 초점을 맞춤으로써, 자본주의 상품 경제나 근대 모빌리티 시스템에 의거한 당대 이동성이 문학 작품 속에서 공적 질서에 의해 규정되는 현 위치로부터 벗어나 새로운 장소로 향하고자 하는 ‘이행(移行)의 욕망’에서 기인하는 것으로 형상화되고 있다는 점을 고찰하고자 했다. 즉 근대 소설이 “총체성이 와해된 사회에서 그 현실적 모순을 해결하기 위해 새로운 미래를 바라보는 것”이라면, 전통적인 신분 질서가 “물거품처럼 꺼지고” 식민화로 인해 분열된 시공간에 직면해야 했던 조선인들에게 있어서 개별 이동을 가능케 하는 자본주의 상품 경제 및 근대 모빌리티 시스템이라는 동력이란 “지긋지긋하고 넌덜머리가 나는” 지금-여기의 현실적 모순을 벗어나 미래의 자아 및 시공간을 향해 나아가도록 하는 문학적 장치로서 활용되었음을 상기할 필요가 있다. 그렇다면 각자의 이동 동력 및 궤적을 영위하고, 이를 통해 공적 질서 ‘너머’의 이미지 및 경관들을 포착함으로써 “이상촌(理想村)”으로 이행하고자 했던 식민지 조선의 주체들은 대동아공영권이라는 제국 일본의 장벽 내에 속박된 이후에도, 여전히 “사람을 살리기도 하고 죽이기도 하는 조화가 무궁한 돈” 혹은 “거리거리 장쾌하게 쏜살같이 달아 지나가는 자동차”라는 동력에 의거함으로써 제국이 그려내는 파노라마 ‘너머’의 시공간으로 스스로를 이행시킬 수 있었던 것일까? 이 글에서는 『점경』, 『아세아의 여명』 등 식민지 후반 박태원의 장편소설에 나타난 이동성에 초점을 맞춤으로써, 자본주의 상품 경제 및 근대 모빌리티 시스템이라는 동력이 전시체제라는 제국의 법역(法域)에 직면하여 개별 주체들의 이동에 어떠한 변화를 초래하게 되었는지를 분석하고자 한다. 나아가 제국의 통치 질서에 속박되었음에도 불구하고, 지금-여기를 벗어나 새로운 미래로 향하고자 했던 조선인들의 욕망이 “돛을 높이 달고 별빛 푸른 북쪽 하늘을 향해 달아나는” 장면으로서 보다 생생하게 표상되기도 했던 식민지 후반의 시대적 흐름 하에서, 조선인들은 모빌리티의 동력들에 의거함으로써 어떠한 문화적 이행(移行)의 가능성을 상상하고자 했는지를 고찰할 것이다.

영문 초록

This study focuses on tracks of individuals’ mobility in literary works during the colonial period, particularly examining the fact that the mobility of the times in relation to the commodity economy of capitalism or modern mobility system is depicted as resulting from ‘the desire of switchover’ from the current position specified by the public order in literary works to a new place. In other words, while modern novels “were to look to the new future in order to address the realistic contradiction in the society where the totality had collapsed,” in Koreans’ perspective, the traditional order of social standing “broke down like bubbles” and the space and time came to a dissolution due to the colonization. It needs to be noted that to them, the commodity economy of capitalism that made individual mobility possible and the driving force called ‘modern mobility system’ were utilized as a literary mechanism to escape from the realistic contradiction now-here “that is tedious and wearisome” and to move towards oneself and time and space in the future. Subjects of Joseon that was a colonial at that time desired to move into the “Ideal Village” by leading the dynamic force and tracks of individual mobility and by capturing the image and landscape ‘beyond’ the public order. Even after being restricted behind the barrier of imperial Japan that was called the Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere, were they still able to move themselves towards the time and space ‘beyond’ the panorama embodied by the empire by making use of “versatile money that could make persons live or die” or by utilizing the driving force that was “automobiles rushing through one street after another excitingly”? This paper focuses on the mobility represented in long novels of Park Tae-Won at the latter part of the colonial period such as “Staffage” and “The Dawn of Asia”, with the aim to examine what changes the driving forces-the commodity economy of capitalism and the modern mobility system-caused to individual subjects in the face of the empire’s jurisdiction or war regime. In addition to that, Koreans desired to “run away towards the starry northern sky with a sail hoisted high above” with the hope of escaping from here-now and heading for the new future despite their restricted position under the empire’s rule. Such desire was vividly depicted back in times of the latter part of the colonial period. This study examines what possibility of cultural switchover they imagined as Koreans relied on the dynamic force of mobility.
