국문 초록

김동인의 ｢K박사의 연구｣는 무취를 지향하는 과학을 통해 근대 문명이 구사하는 “탈취의 전략”을 보여준다. 이때 자연은 악취가 나는 타자로 전락한다. 그러나 악취는 도시와 사회에서도 풍긴다. 그리고 “하층계급은 냄새가 난다”는 조지 오웰의 말이나 박태원의 ｢골목 안｣이 잘 보여주듯이, 도시의 대표적인 악취는 가난의 냄새다. 공간적 경계를 넘을 수 있는 냄새는 오히려 계층 사이의 경계를 환기한다. 그 점에서 ｢소낙비｣의 이 주사가 춘호 처의 냄새를 꾸짖는 것은 의미심장하다. 그런데 후각은 타인종이나 타민족을 “다른 사람들”로서 배제하기도 한다. 흥미로운 것은, 이인화로 하여금 조선 민족의 “구더기 썩는 냄새”를 폭로하게 하는 ｢만세전｣의 경우다. 식민지 한국문학은 종종 하층계급이자 식민지인으로서 이중으로 악취를 풍기는 조선인들을 스스로 묘사함으로써 그 복잡한 정체성을 그려내었다. 이는 이효석의 ｢엉겅퀴의 장｣에서 마늘 냄새를 둘러싸고 조선인 남성과 일본인 여성 사이에 벌어진 갈등의 의미와도 관련된다. 즉 이 소설에서 냄새는 제국과 식민지의 권력관계를 환기한다. 이광수의 ｢사랑｣은 냄새의 도덕화를 시도한 대표적인 근대소설이다. 안빈 박사는 과학 실험을 통해 발견한 “아우라몬”과 “아모로겐”의 냄새를 선과 악에 연결시킨다. 그리고 탐욕과 죄의 악취가 풍기는 전자의 사랑을 극복해 자비의 향기로 충만한 후자의 사랑으로 나아가야 한다고 주장한다. 더 나아가 ｢무명｣에서 서술되듯이, 이광수는 냄새에 종교적인 의의를 부여하기조차 한다. 한편 현진건의 ｢타락자｣에서 묘사되는 것처럼, 냄새는 존재에 대한 기억을 일깨운다. 따라서 이러한 냄새는 정지용이 양복 가게의 옷에서 맡은 냄새와 대비된다. 후자는 신상품의 냄새, 즉 화폐 교환으로써 “여자 옷”과 “여자”를 관계 맺게 하는 시장의 냄새이다. 이상의 ｢지주회시｣와 ｢날개｣는 이 두 가지 냄새를 종합한다. 주인공들은 “아내의 살”에서 다른 남자들의 “허다한 지문 냄새”를 맡거나 아내의 화장품에서 “아내의 체취의 파편”만을 느낀다. 그들은 이렇게 그리움과 소외를 파국적으로 매개하면서, “담벼락을 뚫고 스며드는” 근대 사회를 묘사해 낸다.

영문 초록

Kim Dong-in’s “Doctor K s Research(K박사의 연구)” shows the “strategy of deodorization” of the modern civilization through science which aims to be odorless. In this way, nature becomes the malodorous other. But odors also come from cities and societies. And, as George Orwell says, “the lower class smells,” or Park Tae-won’s “In the Alley(골목 안)” reveals well, the city’s typical stench is the smell of poverty. The smell that can cross the spatial boundary rather evokes the boundaries of the hierarchy. In that sense it is significant that Yi jusa of “Shower(소나 기)” rebukes the stink of Chun-ho s wife. However, the olfactory sense also excludes other races or ethnics as “the others.” What is interesting is the case of “On the Eve of the Uprising(만세전)” in which Lee In-hwa exposes the “maggots rotting smell” of Korea. In this way, colonial Korean literature often portrayed the complex identity of double-smelling Koreans as lower classes and colonial people. This is related to the meaning of the conflict between a Korean man and a Japanese woman over the smell of garlic in Lee Hyo-seok’s “The Chapter of Azami(엉겅퀴의 장)”. In this text, the smell implies the power relationship between the empire and the colony. Lee Kwang-su’s Love(사랑) is a representative modern novel that attempted the moralization of smell. Dr. Anbin connects the smell of “auramon” and “amorogen” found in scientific experiments with good and evil. And he insists on overcoming the former love which is full of stench of greed and sin, and moving forward to the latter love filled with the scent of mercy. Furthermore, as described in “Mumyong(무명)”, Lee Kwang-Soo even gives religious significance to smells. On the other hand, as described in Hyun Jin-gun’s “The Fallen(타락자)”, the smell awakens the memory of existence. Thus, this smell is contrasted with the smell that Jeong Ji-yong smells in the clothes of the clothes shop. The latter is the smell of new products, that is, the smell of the market that links “woman clothes” and “women” by currency exchange. Yi Sang s “A Spider meets a Pig(지주회시)” and “The Wings(날개)” synthesize these two smells. Each protagonist smells “many fingerprints” of other men in “wife’s flesh” or feels only “the fragments of wife’s body smell” in wife’s cosmetics. In these ways, mediating longing and alienation catastrophically, they portray the modern society that “penetrates through walls.”
