국문 초록

이 논문은 식민지 시기 소설에 담긴 감각의 기록이 갖는 의미를 적극적으로 독해하고자 한다. 작가 염상섭은 『만세전』에서 식민지 조선을 ‘무덤’이라고 말할 수 있고 ‘대한독립만세’라고 외칠 수 있게 되는 감각의 회복을, 공동체를 자기 폐로 끌어들이는 ‘후각’적 경험을 통해 보여주었다. 경계의 감각이자 생존의 감각인 후각은 시각을 보완하거나 배반하며 복합적인 정체성 각성에 있어서 능동적 기능을 수행했다. 그것은 시각적으로 압도하고 위장하는 근대성의 본질을 간파한 근대적 개인의 각성이기도 했다. 일찍이 이인화의 발화와 중심 서사를 중심으로 ‘인텔리겐차의 좌절’이라는 한계가 거론되었던 ｢만세전｣에 대한 평가는, 복합적인 감각의 기록에 대한 독해를 통해 재고될 필요가 있다. 검열로 인해 논리적 진술과 인과적 서술을 탈각시킨 채 ‘식민지 실어증’에 걸릴 수밖에 없던 식민지 문학은 사상과 사건을 온전히 진술하지 못한 대신 감각의 알리바이를 남겼다. 이것이 지금 우리가 감각의 연막을 통해 식민지 문학을 재독해야 하는 이유다.

영문 초록

This paper seeks to understand the meaning of sensory records through an active reading of novels from the colonial period. In Mansejeon, Yeom Sang-seop used the olfactory experience of breathing, an act of drawing the community into one’s lungs, to show the sensory recovery that was necessary to call colonized Korea a “grave” and cry, ‘Independence for Korea.’ As a sense associated with boundaries and survival, smells reinforced or betrayed the sense of sight. Thus olfaction performed a proactive function in the awakening of a complex/multifaceted identity. The sense of smell also served to awaken the individual to the visual dominance and deceptiveness which was the essence of modernity. From early on, the narrative focus on the awakening of Lee In-wha, the protagonist of Mansejeon, made the novel a subject of discussions about the limitations of the ‘intelligentsia’s despair.’ However, the novel needs to be reconsidered and reevaluated through a reading of complex sensory records. Censorship drove off logical and causal narratives, making ‘colonial aphasia’ inevitable. Although colonial literature was unable to narrate ideas and events fully, it left behind a sensory alibi. This alibi is a reason to reread colonial literature through the medium of sensory experience.
