전후 『애국독본』의 헤게모니 전략과 문화정치

국문 초록

이 논문은 전후(戰後)에 발간된 『애국독본』을 실증하고 분석함으로써, 중등학교 애국교육 교재의 헤게모니 전략을 고찰한 연구이다. 『애국독본』은 중등용과 고등용 두 권으로 구성되어 있으며, 엮은이는 한국교육문화협회이다. 전후 사회를 재건하는 과정에서 ‘애국교육’은 중요한 국가 이데올로기 전수 수단이 되었다. 이 논고에서 분석 대상으로 삼은 『애국독본-중등용』과 『애국독본-고등용』은 단순한 교과용 도서가 아니라, 국가에 속한 개인을 ‘애국(愛國)하는 주체’로 호출하고 육성하는 이데올로기적 국가장치이다. 문헌 분석 결과, 『애국독본』이 이데올로기적 국가장치로 기능할 수 있었던 배경은 두 가지로 파악된다. 첫째, “문교부 추천” 교재인 『애국독본』은 제도화된 교육 형식이라는 점이다. 둘째, 자유발행형식의 『애국독본』이 학교 현장에 광범위하게 보급되었다는 사실이다. 전후 문교시책 중 가장 핵심은 자유민주주의 이데올로기에 입각한 국가관의 확립과 애국심의 고취이며, 이를 교실 현장에서 실행하는 교재 『애국독본』은 구체적인 헤게모니 장치가 된다. 『애국독본』이 학습자에게 ‘애국하는 마음’을 기입하고 발현하기 위해 사용한 헤게모니 전략은 크게 두 가지로 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 『애국독본』은 냉전 이데올로기를 바탕으로 학습자와 대중독자를 ‘반일’과 ‘반공’의 주체로 ‘재건’하는 헤게모니 전략을 사용하고 있다. 냉전체제의 애국담론은 일본 제국주의와 북한 공산주의를 타자로 발명하며, 이는 지배 이데올로기를 아무런 이의없이 수용하게 하는 ‘지배적 독서’ 경험을 갖게 한다. 둘째, 『애국독본』은 관변 이데올로기를 바탕으로 학습자를 ‘희생’하는 주체로 육성하는 헤게모니 전략을 사용하고 있다. ‘민족/애족 정신’을 담고 있는 역사전기서사와 논설 텍스트는 사회 재건을 위해 ‘희생’하는 주체를 창안한다. 학습자의 『애국독본』 읽기가 전복적 성격을 상실한 ‘타협적 독서’에 그칠 수밖에 없는 이유이다. 이와 같이 중·고등용 『애국독본』은 지배 이데올로기에 순응하고 순종하는 ‘애국적 주체’를 만들기 위한 전후 사회의 헤게모니 장치이며, 이는 순수한 교육 활동이 아니라 문화정치의 한 수단임을 확인할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper analyzes the composition and contents of 『Patriot textbooks』 published after the Korean War. It is also a study on the hegemony strategy of patriotic education textbooks in secondary schools. 『Patriot textbooks』, which published by the Korea Education & Culture Associationis, is divided into secondary and high school. In the process of rebuilding the postwar society, ‘patriotic education’ became a means of conveying national ideology. 『Patriot textbookssecondary 』 and 『Patriot textbooks-high school』 analyzed in this paper are not just a textbook. It is an ideological device that makes an individual a ‘patriotic being’. As a result of analyzing the literature, there are two reasons why 『Patriot textbooks』 could function as an ideological device. first, 『Patriot textbooks』 was divided according to school level. second, 『Patriot textbooks』 were widespread in school. At the core of post-war policy measures is the establishment of a national view based on liberal democratic ideology and the promotion of patriotism. The specific hegemony device which realizes this measure in the field is 『Patriot textbooks』. There are two reasons for this. First, learners are nurtured as subjects of social reconstruction based on the Cold War ideology. Patriotic discourse in the Cold War recognizes Japanese imperialism and North Korean communism as the other. This creates a ‘dominant reading experience’ that allows the dominant ideology to be accepted without any objection. Second, based on the government s ideology, it trains learners as victims. Historical biographical narratives and editorial texts contained in the 『Patriot textbooks』 make learners the subjects of ‘dedication’ and ‘sacrifice’ to post-war social reconstruction. This creates a ‘compromising reading experience’ that has lost resistive reading. 『Patriot textbooks』 is an ideological state apparatus. In other words, it is a hegemony strategy to make ‘the subject of patriotism’ conform to the ruling ideology. This is not a pure educational activity but a means of thorough cultural device.
