요산 김정한의 자기검열과 이념적 모색

국문 초록

본고는 한국전쟁기 요산 김정한의 소설 <병원에서는>과 당시 에세이 등을 중심으로 작가의 소설 창작 의식과 그 이면에 숨겨진 의도를 파악하는데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해서 요산의 해방기 행적과 의식을 추적하여 한국전쟁기와 연결 지점을 찾고 기존 요산 문학 연구의 방향과 다른 방식의 소설이 전개된 원인을 분석하는 등 두 가지 측면에서 연구를 진행했다. 먼저 요산 김정한은 부산, 경남 지역에서 해방기 사회주의, 민족주의 운동을 전개하는데 중요한 역할을 한 좌파의 대표적인 지식인이었다. 그는 문학, 예술, 정치 등 다양한 분야에서 좌파 활동을 하며 여러 단체에서 중심적인 역할을 했다. 그런데 단독정부가 수립되면서 우파가 권력을 가지게 되고, 그의 활동이나 이념도 문제가 되기 시작했다. 그때부터 좌파는 남한에서 불온한 사상을 지닌 제거 대상이 되었으며, 요산 김정한도 몇 번의 죽을 고비를 넘기면서 이념적 전향이 필수임을 깨닫게 되었다. 다음으로 기존 연구들은 대부분 요산 문학의 저항성, 민중성, 리얼리즘에만 초점을 맞추었다. 그런데 <병원에서는>은 이런 기존의 요산 문학 틀로는 분석하기가 어려운 작품이다. 한국전쟁기 작가들은 국가의 검열에 자유로울 수 없었다. 그래서 그들은 전쟁에 직접 참여하는 종군작가로 활동하거나 반공작품을 창작하여 이념성을 증명했다. 소설 <병원에서는>도 요산 김정한이 보도연맹에 가입하여 이념적 전향 후 자기검열과 이념 증명의 결과로 만들어진 작품이다. 이 소설은 김정한의 작품 중 거의 유일하게 반공의식이 표면화되어 있다. 이를 정리해보면 다음과 같다. <병원에서는>은 첫째, 김정한이 한국전쟁기에 생명의 위협에서 벗어나기 위한 몸부림이었으며, 둘째, 자신의 이념적 태도를 명확하게 보여주기 위함이었으며, 셋째 자기검열을 통한 이념적 모색을 위한 방편이었다. 그런데 1960년대 문단복귀 이후 김정한의 작품은 다시 민중에게로 향한다. 소설에 다시 민중이 등장하고 그들에게 애정을 쏟는다. 그런데 이런 경향이 단순히 회귀로만 읽히면 안 된다. 이념의 전향과 반공문학 창작을 통해 자신을 감추고 살았어야만 했던 김정한이 생존의 위협에서 조금 벗어나면서 민중과 분단 한국의 문제에 목소리를 낸 것이다. 분단은 결국 이념의 문제이다. 이념에 희생된 수많은 동료들과 요산 자신도 이념의 굴레를 벗어나는 것은 어려웠다. 그의 생각은 결국 분단국가를 탈피하는 것과 민중이 중심이 되는 국가로 이어진다. 그래서 요산은 1960년대 이후 분단국가라는 한국 사회의 문제 속에서 민중들의 삶에 관심을 가지고 다시 적극적으로 사회에 뛰어들게 되었던 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper tried to grasp the artist s novel creation consciousness and the intention behind it, focusing on Yosan Kim Jeong-han s novel “In the Hospital” and essays at that time. To this end, the study carried out research in two aspects: tracking the movements and rituals of the Liberation Period of Yosan to find a connection point with the Korean War, and analyzing the causes of the development of novels in a different way from the existing researches of the Yosan Literature. First, Yosan Kim Jeong-han was a representative intellectual of the left who played an important role in the socialist and nationalist movements of the liberation period in Busan and Gyeongnam. He has played a central role in many organizations, including leftist activities in various fields such as literature, art and politics. However, with the establishment of an independent government, the right became power, and his activities and ideologies began to be a problem. In other words, there was no way for the left to survive in South Korean society. Since then, the left has become a subject of disarmament in South Korea, and Yosan Kim Jeong-han has realized that ideological conversion is essential as he overcame several deaths. Next, most of the previous studies focused only on the resistance, folklore, and realism of Yosan literature. However, “in the hospital”, it is difficult to analyze in the existing Yosan literature framework. Korean war writers could not be free from state censorship. So they proved their ideology by working as a war writer who directly participated in war or by creating anti-work products. The novel “In the Hospitals” is also the result of Yosan Kim Jeong-han s joining the Confederation of Press, resulting in self-censorship and proof of ideology after ideological conversion. In other words, this novel has almost the only anti-communism in Kim Jeong-han s works. This is summarized as follows. “In the hospital”, first, Kim Jeong-han struggled to escape the threat of life during the Korean War, second, to show his ideological attitude clearly, and third, to find ideological search through self-censorship. However, after the return of the paragraph in the 1960s, Kim Jeong-han s work goes back to the people. People appear again in the novel and give affection to them. But this tendency should not be read simply as regression. Kim Jeong-han, who should have concealed himself through the conversion of ideologies and the creation of anti-public literature, voiced the problems of the people and divided Korea as he escaped from the threat of survival. Division is, after all, a matter of ideology. Numerous colleagues and Yosan himself who were sacrificed to ideology also had difficulty escaping the bonds of ideology. His thoughts eventually lead to the departure of the divided state and to the state centered on the people. So Yosan has been interested in the lives of people since the 1960s and became actively involved in the society.
