국문 초록

본고의 목적은 <예덕선생전>의 등장인물을 분석한 후, 이를 바탕으로 작품에 형상화된 근대성의 한 국면(局面)을 도출하는 데 있다. <예덕선생전>은 연암 박지원의 구전(九傳) 가운데 하나로, 스승 선귤자와 제자 자목 사이의 대화체로 구성된 작품이다. 자목은 당대의 일반적 사람들을 대표하며, 선귤자는 새로운 시대에 필요한 새로운 인물상을 추구하는 변혁기 지식인을 대표하는 인물이다. 당시 대중들은 엄 행수를 똥을 푸면서 먹고 사는 천한 존재로 인식하였지만, 선귤자는 엄 행수 자체 보다는 엄 행수 같은 존재의 삶의 방식과 지향적 가치에 중점을 두었다. 엄 행수는 농업적 측면에서는 똥과 채소 사이, 경제적 측면에서는 오물과 거름 사이에 존재하는 인물인데, 선귤자는 변화한 시대에는 인물 자체가 아니라 그의 존재성을 볼 수 있어야 한다고 강조했다. 선귤자의 이러한 시선은 작품의 근대 지향성을 함의한다고 할 수 있다. 이 작품의 해석은, 엄 행수의 근면과 검소를 넘어서야 한다. 근면과 검소, 그 너머에 존재하는 돈의 흐름과 상업 경제 활동에 적극적으로 참여하는 경제 주체로서의 모습을 포착해야 하는 것이다. 이러한 점이 <예덕선생전>에 투영된 연암의 근대 의식이라 할 수 있다. 엄 행수 같은 방식으로 삶을 살아가고, 선귤자 같은 관점으로 그를 바라보면서 서로가 벗으로 삼는다면 조선 사회는 어렵지 않게 변화하고 달라질 것이다. 이렇게 된다면 방향성을 상실한 조선이 더욱 발전할 수 있을 것이라는 희망을 가질 수 있다. 이것이 바로 전환기 시대의 고뇌하는 지식인의 비판적 메시지이며 성찰적 지향이라 할 수 있으며 연암 문학의 근대성이라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the characters of Ye-Doek sunsaeng Jeon and to derive an aspect of modernity embodied in his works. This work is one of Yeon-am Park Ji-won s nine works, consisting of a dialogue between the teacher and the disciples. Ja-mog represents the common people of the time, and Seon-gyul-ja represents a revolutionary intellectual who is pursuing the new character needed for a new era. At the time, the public perceived it as a humble being who lived on the shit, but Seon-gyul-ja focused on the way of life and the oriented values of such an act rather than the act itself. Um haeng-su, agriculturally, exists between shit and vegetables. And economically, it exists between the dirt and the manure. Seon-gyul-ja emphasized that in times of change, one should be able to see his existence, not the character itself. This gaze implies the modern orientation of the work. The interpretation of this work must go beyond the diligence and frugality of Um haeng-su. It is necessary to capture the flow of money beyond diligence, frugality and beyond, as an economic agent actively participating in commercial economic activities. This is the modern consciousness of Yeon-am projected on . If you live your life in the same way as Um haeng-su, and look at him from the perspective of Seon-gyul-ja and make friends with each other, the Korean society will not change and be difficult. If this happens, there can be hope that Joseon, which lost its direction, will be able to develop further. This is the critical message and reflective orientation of the troubled intellectuals in the transitional era and the modernity of Yon-am literature.
