妓生時調에 드러난 防禦機制 고찰

국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 이른바 정신분석학의 분석 도구인 방어기제라는 이론을 통해 기생시조에 나타난 정서의 특징과 그 의미를 살피는 데 있다. 정신분석학적 고전시가를 재 탐구하고 그 안에 존재하고 있는 시적화자를 연구하는 것은 병리학적인 접근이 아닌 평범한 인간들이 지닐 수밖에 없는 욕망과 갈등의 심리 상태를 考究하고자 하는 것이다. 본 연구의 핵심은 바로 ‘慾望과 缺乏의 해결과정’이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 여성들의 욕망 가운데 여성이 특히 男性과의 사랑에 대한 욕망이 결핍되었을 때의 심리상황을 노래로 형상화하였으며 이 언술에 무의식적으로 반영된 방어기제의 동원을 통해 스스로의 심리적 안정을 찾고 사라진 평정 상태를 회복하고자 하는 노력이 어떻게 현실극복에 기여할 수 있는가를 살펴보고자 한다. 이 때 자아가 동원하는 방어기제를 통해 드러나는 시적화자의 태도는 곧, 정서로 연결될 수 있으리라 본다. 방어기제를 통해 화자의 ‘욕망과 결핍의 해결과정’을 살펴본 기생시조에서는 의외성을 발견할 수 있다. 기생들은 비록 천민 집단에 속하는 최하위 신분임에도 불구하고 그녀들의 작품 및 교양 수준은 사대부들과 견주어 부족함이 없었다. 이것은 士大夫와의 오랜 교유 속에서 자연스럽게 이루어진 현상이 아닐까 한다. 실제로 기생들의 작품 가운데 사대부 시조와 표현 방법이 유사한 작품이 매우 많이 나타난다. 이러한 현상은 방어기제를 통해 자신을 보호하는 방법에서도 비슷한 양상으로 나타나는데 관념적이고 고차원적인 ‘승화’는 유교적 이데올로기와 가장 맞닿아 있다고 여겨지기 때문이다. 기생들은 이러한 승화의 방어기제를 통하여 심리적 위기를 극복하고자 했기 때문이며 이는 관념적이고 형이상학적 사유 체계로 무장한 士大夫와의 정신적인 交感의 영향으로 무의식적으로 형성된 것이라고 보는 것이 타당할 것이다. 이것은 현실의 불만족스러운 상황에 대해 건강하고 건설적인 방어기제인 승화를 가장 많이 동원한다는 사실이 지니는 의미는 매우 크다고 할 수 있다. 기생들이 억압받고 천시 받는 삶이었음에도 불구하고 그러한 상황에 매몰되지 않고 누구보다도 그 욕망과 그 결핍으로 인해 상처받은 자아를 건강하게 방어하면서 극복하고 있음을 확인 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to observe emotional characteristic and its meaning appeared in the Giesang poem through a theory called as defence mechanism which is an analysis tool of psychology. Observing the psychoanalytical classical poetry and studying the poetic narrator existing in it is not a pathological approach but to observe the psychological status of desire and conflict which ordinary human beings should inevitably possess. The core of this study can be described as “a process to solve desire and deficiency. Among women’s desires, the psychological status when the desire for love with men is lack was shaped in song and to observe how the efforts to seek for Psychological stability through bringing the defence mechanism reflected unconsciously in this enonciation and recover the lost composure state can contribute to overcome reality. The attitude of poetic narrator revealed through the defence mechanism which ego brings can be linked immediately to emotion. Unexpectedness is found in the Giesang poem in which the speaker’s ‘process to solve desire and deficiency’ through the defence mechanism. In spite that Giesan is the lowed status which belongs to untouchable class, their work and cultivation level was not short compared to the gentry. This may be due to long social intercourse with the gentry. Actually, lots of works with similar expression to the gentry poetry appeared in the Giesang’s work. This phenomenon appeared in a similar pattern in how to protect themselves through the defence mechanism because conceptual and high level sublimation was considered to be well close to Confucian ideology. It is reasonable to think that such sublimate defence mechanism was to overcome the psychological crisis and was formed unconsciously by the mental communion with the gentry who armed with conceptual and metaphysical speculation system. Bringing sublimation, the sound and constructive defence mechanism, mostly is very meaningful in fact. It is observed that they were never buried in such a situation overcoming through defending suffered ego due to desire and deficiency in spite that Giesang had lived oppressed and despised life.
