국문 초록

정철에게 있어서 자연이 어떤 의미를 가졌고, 정철은 자연을 어떻게 받아들여 문학 작품을 창작하였는가는 그가 남긴 작품의 의미망을 고찰하는 데 중요한 문제이다. 실제 정철의 자연에 대한 인식은 당시 일반 사대부들의 인식과 많은 차이를 보이고 있다. 이러한 사실을 작품 속에서 쉽게 읽어낼 수 있다. 이러한 이유는 그만의 독특한 자연관에서 기인하고 있다. 즉, 정철에게 있어서 자연은 당시의 사대부들이 지향하였던 도학적 자연과 장자가 추구하였던 무위의 자연이 충돌하고 있는 고정적이지 않은 대상이었기 때문이다. 정철의 자연관은 그의 자연을 소재로 한 작품에서 통일성 있게 일관되어 나타나고 있지 않다. 그의 작품을 분석해보면 개별 작품에서 나타나는 자연이 도학적 자연관에 기초하는가 하면, 무위의 자연관에 기초하고 있다. 그러므로 엄밀한 의미에서 그의 자연관을 단언적으로 규정하는 것은 어려운 일일 수 있다. 하지만 ‘이러한 특성 역시 하나의 자연관으로 볼 수 있겠다.’라는 것이 본 논의의 출발선이다. 본 논의는 철학 논쟁이 아니라 문학 연구이고, 문학 연구의 목적은 항상 작품의 폭넓은 이해에 기초하고 있기 때문이다. 정철의 도학적 자연관은 작품 창작에서 내적 성찰을 위한 수단으로 작용하고 있다. 그의 작품의 상당수가 맑고 깨끗한 자연의 아름다움을 보고, 그를 닮고자 하는 열망이 시화된 것이다. 곧 이러한 열망이 작품의 창작 동기이자, 내적 주제인 것이다. 또한 자연이 관조의 대상이 아니라 실재의 반영이라는 그의 자연관은 작품이 관찰과 묘사를 통하여 예술미를 획득하는데 기여하였다. 정철의 도교적 자연관은 그의 삶에서 유래하였다. 어린 시절 겪었던 가문의 참혹한 역사는 깊은 내적 상처가 되었다. 여기서 형성된 세계관은 모든 대상을 이분화 하는 인식을 형성시켰다. 그의 자연관 역시 이에 영향을 받아 자연을 현실 탈출구로 인식하게 하였다. 곧, 자연은 현실이자, 현실 밖이라는 이중적 이미지를 갖게 된 것이다. 이러한 정철의 자연관은 역설적이게도 그의 작품을 풍부하게 만들어 주었다. 그가 지닌 천재적 재능과 이러한 자연관이 그만의 독특한 문학세계를 형성한 것이다.
