국문 초록

1920년대 ‘동북아해역’에서 동북아 지식인들의 ‘지적교류’는 1919년의 3ㆍ1운동과 같은 해 중국의 5·4운동의 사회적, 정치적 혼란으로 상징된다. 1921년 ‘중국의 오래된 문화는 5ㆍ4 운동의 새로운 이상과 새로운 정치적 관심의 분위기를 어떻게 직면하고 있는 가’라는 주제를 전달하기 위해 신문사 특파원으로 파견 된 아쿠타가와 류노스케의 목적은 다른 곳에 있었다. 또한 선행연구에서 지적되고 있는 나약한 대정시대의 지식인이라든가, 중국의 야만성을 부각시켜, 일본의 문명성을 강조했다기 보다, 그의 관심은 다른 곳을 향하고 있었다. 그는 오로지 ‘해역’을 건너 일본에 전해진 중국 소설의 세계를 향수하고자 했고, 중국의 전통과 문화를 피부로 느껴보고자 했다. 하지만 아쿠타가와가 기대했던 중국 소설의 세계는 ‘삽화’를 통해서 그에게 만족감을 안겨주었다. 선행연구에서 근대 일본의 지식인으로서 격동기 중국의 현실을 회피한다는 주장에 일리가 있지만, 아쿠타가와 역시 5ㆍ4 운동 이후, 상해, 강남, 북경 등에서 배일 감정의 현장을 목격하며, 이러한 사회적, 정치적 상황 보다, 그의 흥미를 끈 것은 영국, 프랑스, 미국 등의 조계지 등이 들어선 급속한 상해 문화의 변화였다. 그리고 서양의 향락적인 문화의 침투와 혼란의 양상이었다. 또한 ‘해역’을 건너 상해에 거주하는 일본인들의 삶과 사고를 들여다보는 것이었다. 특파원으로서 사실을 있는 그대로 표현하여 전달하는 저널리스트가 아닌, 비유적이며 암시적인 형태, 더구나 인간의 문제를 빈정거리는 투로 묘사한 소설적 문체는 기행문을 읽는 신문독자들에게 혼란을 주었다. 아쿠타가와의 다른 기행문과 달리『상해유기』는 유독 빈정거리며 비아냥거리는 투의 소설의 기교적 문체가 많았던 것도 사실이다. ‘동북아해역’의 ‘지적교류’에서 접촉과 갈등, 변용의 과정이 있다면, 아쿠타가와는 상해에서 접촉과 갈등의 양상을 경험하고 있었다. 불결함과 무례함으로 표현된 상해의 첫 인상은 표면적인 묘사에 지나지 않는다. 아쿠타가와에게 상해는 단순한 문화적 충격을 넘어선 ‘동북아해역’의 ‘지적교류’에서 얻은 적지 않은 수확이었다고 말할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The intellectual exchanges in Northeast Asia are often represented by social and political confusion during the times, such as the March 1 Independence Movement in 1919 in Korea and the May 4 Movement in China. Akutagawa Ryunoske was dispatched as a special journalist in 1921 to cover a news story on how the long-standing culture of China was facing new ideals and new political interest, but his real purpose was elsewhere. Preceding studies argue that he emphasized the weak intellectuals during the times as well as the barbarism of China to emphasize Japanese civilization but his interest was in other areas. He was interested in appreciating the world of Chinese novels that he had come across through novels that were available in Japan. He wanted to see the culture and tradition of China in person. But he had thus far only been able to look into the world depicted in Chinese novels through illustrations. While preceding studies are reasonable in their argument that he avoided the reality of China during turbulent times, Akutagawa Ryunoske, too witnessed the anti-Japan emotions in Shanghai, Gangnam and Beijing after the May 4 movement in 1919. What drew his interest was not the political situation but the rapid change taking place due to the influence from France, Britain and U.S. The invasion of Western hedonistic culture and confusion sparked his interested. in addition, he wanted to look at the lives and thoughts of Japanese people who had crossed the sea to live in Shanghai. His writing style is not that of a journalist that portrays facts as they are but has a lot of metaphors and implicit forms, sometimes mixed with satire of the human condition. Such a style caused confusion among the newspaper readers. Unlike other travel journals of Akutagawa Ryunoske, the Shanghai Travel Journal has a particular abundance in cynical and satirical tones. If there was contact and conflict as well as transformation taking place during intellectual exchanges in Northeast Asia, Akutagawa Ryunoske was definitely experiencing this in Shanghai. The first impression of Shanghai as an unpleasant, unclean and rude place is just a surface-level depiction. For Akutagawa Ryunoske, Shanghai was a significant fruit gained from the intellectual exchanges in Northeast Asia that go beyond simple culture shock.
