국문 초록

19세기 말 江南機器製造總局(이하 ‘강남제조국’) 飜譯館에서 출간한 서적은 국내에 유입되어 지식인들이 서양 학문을 받아들이는 데 영향을 끼쳤다. 高宗은 개화 정책 추진과 함께 이들 서적을 들여왔으며, 현재 국내 소장 상황을 통해 볼 때 왕실에서뿐만 아니라 일반 지식인들도 강남제조국 출간 서적을 두루 구해 보았던 것으로 추정된다. 본고에서는 강남제조국 번역관 출간 서적의 국내 유입 양상을 규장각, 장서각, 존경각 소장본과 기타 소장 기관 소장본으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 규장각 소장 서적을 대상으로 조사한 결과 조선왕실에서 소장한 중국 서적 중 80종이 강남제조국 출간 서적이다. 또한, 장서각과 존경각에도 강남제조국 출간 서적이 10종 소장되어 있다. 또, 국립중앙도서관 한국고전적종합목록에 게재되어 있는 자료를 대상으로 국내 소장 현황을 살펴본 결과 모두 45건의 강남제조국 출간 서적이 국내에 소장되어 있음을 확인했다. 다양한 분야의 강남제조국 출간 서적이 국내에 유입되었다는 사실은 외세의 침략을 겪고 있던 당시 왕실과 민간에서 서양의 선진 학문을 알고자 하는 욕구가 컸음을 보여주는 증거다. 특히, 국내에 유입된 강남제조국 출간 서적 중에서도 군사 무기 및 전술, 지리측량, 圖學, 광물학 분야의 서적은 당시 제국주의 국가들에 의해 주도되었던 세계정세 속에서 조선의 지배계층이 반드시 알아야 하는 지식을 담고 있었다. 이전까지 국내에는 관련 분야의 지식이 거의 없던 상황에서 중국으로부터 구입한 서적은 근대 지식을 얻을 수 있는 중요한 원천이었다. 따라서 현재 국내에 소장되어 있는 이들 서적은 근대전환기 왕실과 민간에서 서양의 근대 지식을 습득한 경로를 보여주는 실질적 근거가 될 수 있다.

영문 초록

The books published by Jiangnan General Manufacturing Bureau (江南機器製造總局) flowed into Korea and influenced the acceptance of western science by Koreans. It is estimated that Gojong (高宗), who developed the open-door policy, actively bought these books and, based on the current collection, not only royal family and government officials but also general intellectuals in Korea read the books published by Jiangnan General Manufacturing Bureau. I examined three main institutions’(Kyujangkak, Jangseogak, and Jonkyungkak) current collection of the books published by Jiangnan General Manufacturing Bureau. As a result of examining the collections, I figured out eighty books published by Jiangnan General Manufacturing Bureau are preserved in Kyujangkak, which is preserving the books from the libraries for Korean royal family and government officials in Joseon dynasty. In addition, there are ten books published by Jiangnan General Manufacturing Bureau at Jangseogak and Jonkyungkak. And investigating National Central Library’s Korean Classics General Catalog Database I found that there are a total of forty five books published by Jiangnan General Manufacturing Bureau in several libraries in Korea. The fact that various books published by Jiangnan General Manufacturing Bureau were brought into Korea indicates that there was a great desire to learn advanced Western studies among the royal family, government officials and general intellectuals in Korea. And among the books published by Jiangnan General Manufacturing Bureau that flowed into Korea, the books on military weapons and tactics, geography, drawing and mineralogical areas contains the knowledge that the ruling class of Joseon must know in the chaotic world led by imperialist countries. At that time the intellectuals in Joseon had little knowledge of relevant fields, thus these books provide a substantial basis for the attempt to acquire Western modern knowledge in the royal family, government officials and general intellectuals at the early modern period.
