영해 원구리 영양남씨의 문중조직과 종족활동

국문 초록

이 논문은 영덕군 영해면 원구리에 거주하는 영양남씨 종족집단의 문중조직과 종족활동에 대한 사례조사 보고서이다. 원구리 영양남씨는 조선시대 중기의 유명한 유학자인 난고 남경훈(蘭皐 南慶薰)의 자손들로서 이 마을에서 400년 이상 세거하고 있다. 이 종족집단에는 광산소(光山所), 동원계(同源稽), 광산회(光山會), 노인소(老人所), 송계(松契) 등의 조직이 있다. 주요한 종족활동으로는 남경훈의 조부로부터 증손자에 이르는 선대 조상을 대상으로 하는 묘제와 남경훈 내외분을 위한 불천위대제, 주요 조상들의 묘역 정화사업, 종족 성원들의 결속을 위한 친목활동, 후손들의 학업을 지원하는 장학사업 등이 있다. 선대 조상의 묘제를 위해서 경작지와 임야를 공동재산으로 소유하고 있다. 원구리 영양남씨의 문중조직과 종족활동에서 나타나는 특징은 다음과 같다. 1. 이 종족집단에는 특별한 사업이나 활동을 위한 조직은 존재하지만 전체 조직을 총괄하는 문중조직이 뚜렷하게 부각되지 않는다. 2. 집단의 중요한 의사결정이 주로 종손과 문중어른들에 의해서 이루어지고 있다. 각 계보의 대표자로 구성된 공식적인 의사결정 기구가 존재하지 않는다. 이러한 의사결정방식은 전통사회에서 많이 행해지던 방식이다. 3. 조상제사를 위한 약간의 토지를 제외하면 종족집단의 공유재산이 존재하지 않는다. 특별한 사업은 종족 구성원들의 모금이나 희사에 의존하고 있다. 4. 종족 구성원들을 결속시키기 위한 친목활동과 후손의 교육을 위한 장학사업을 활발하게 전개하고 있다. 미래지향적인 이러한 사업은 과거지향적인 사업에 관심이 많았던 전통적인 종족집단에서는 잘 나타나지 않는 새로운 모습으로서 종족집단의 변화양상을 잘 보여주고 있다. 원구리 영양남씨 종족집단에서 나타나는 이러한 특징들은 이 종족집단에서만 특유하게 나타나는 고유한 특징인지, 아니면 이 지역의 다른 종족집단에서도 공통으로 나타나는 지역사회의 문화적 특징인지에 대해서는 더 많은 조사 연구가 필요하다.

영문 초록

This is a case study of the lineage organizations and their activities of Yeongyang-Nam lineage group residing in Wongu-ri in Yeonghae-myeon, Yeongdeok-gun. This lineage group consists of the descendants of Nam Gyeong-hun, a renowned Confucian scholar in the mid-Joseon dynasty. The organizations of this lineage group include gwangsan-so(光山所), dongwon- gye(同源稽), gwangsan-hoe(光山會), noin-so(老人所), and song-gye(松契). Their major activities include the management of ancestor worship ceremonies, the cleansing of ancestors` cemeteries, promotion of socializing activities for the solidarity of lineage group members, and developing scholarship programs for the education of their children. They own some cultivated land and forest land to finance ancestor worship ceremonies. Some outstanding features of these organizations and their activities are: 1. There are some organizations for special projects and activities in this lineage group, but no overall umbrella agency is found that govern all these organizations. 2. Important decisions are primarily made by jongson(the eldest grandson of the head family), and munjung-eorundul(significant elders in the lineage). No decision-making body is found which consists of the representatives of lineage factions. This type of decision-making is a conventional practice commonly employed in traditional societies. 3. No communal property of the lineage group is found, except a small area of land devoted to the maintenance of ancestor worship ceremonies. Special projects are financed by the contributions and donations made by the lineage group members. 4. Members of this lineage group are active in the promotion of friendship to strengthen the solidarity of group members and of scholarship to encourage their children`s education. It is rare to find these types of future-oriented programs in other traditional lineage groups, which tend to show great interest in past-oriented activities. It is not possible at this stage to determine whether the features found in Yeongyang-Nam lineage group in Wongu-ri are unique ones of it own, or they are common cultural characteristics of this community and can be found in other lineage groups. Some further research is necessary to do so.
