국문 초록

김원일은 1973년「어둠의 혼」에서 2013년 아들의 아버지에 이르기까지 오랫동안 자신의 유년기 한국전쟁 체험을 서사화해왔다. 이 소설들에서 화자나 주인공으로 설정된 아이는 한국전쟁의 비참과 불행한 가족사를 거치며 현실의 암면에 눈을 뜨고 유년기의 조화로운 세계와 결별한다. 이 같은 서사적 구조는 그간 김원일 소설 연구에서 성장소설이라는 분석틀이 반복적으로 활용되었던 근거였다. 늘푸른 소나무는 김원일 소설에서 반복적으로 다뤄진 성장의 테마가 본격적인 교양소설에 대한 야심으로 구체화된 작품이다. 작가는 늘푸른 소나무를 통해 일제강점기의 이항대립적 세계에서 노비출신 독립운동가 석주율이 정신적으로 성장하는 과정을 추적한다. 석주율은 유학자이자 자신의 주인인 백상충의 가르침을 통해 무장독립투쟁에 뛰어들고, 이후 여러 가지 사상과 종교를 섭렵한 뒤 생명의 가치를 깨닫고 자급자족 공동체를 건설하던 도중 일경의 총에 맞아 죽는다. 절대적인 이항대립의 세계에서 제3의 길을 찾고자 했던 석주율의 공동체운동은 늘푸른 소나무가 연재되던 1980년대 후반 한국 사회에서도 여전히 중요한 과제였다. 1987년 6월의 혁명은 바로 식민지 근대로부터 시작된 민족(국가)과 계급의 모순을 타파하고 새로운 사회를 건설하기 위한 공동체운동이었기 때문이다. 그러나 6월의 광장에 울려 퍼진 혁명의 노래는 다양한 곡조들이 뒤섞인 불협화음이었고, 시간이 지나 87년체제라는 명명법이 일반화된 시점에서 보자면, 그 혁명은 시민사회의 욕망에 충실한, 타협과 약속의 선언이었음을 부인하기 어렵게 되었다. 늘푸른 소나무는 바로 그 한국사회의 변곡점에서 시민계급의 내면성과 통합의 비전에 충실한 본격적인 교양소설로 제출되었고, 그 통합의 비전을 석주율의 공동체운동으로 구체화했다. 그러나 노비출신 식민지인 석주율은 자신이 원했던, 그리고 동시에 작가 김원일이 꿈꿨던 성장과 교양에 이르지 못한다. 그는 수많은 지식과 사상을 섭렵하고 철저히 금욕적인 삶을 살지만, 그의 내면은 생존에 대한 감각으로 갈가리 찢어진다. 서구 교양소설의 주인공과 달리 석주율은 마지막 순간까지 자신의 정체성이 구현된 그러한 공동체를 가질 수 없었기 때문이다. 요컨대 늘푸른 소나무는 전통적인 교양소설에 내재된 시민사회의 폐쇄성과 모순의 계기를 서사 자체의 균열로 증명함과 동시에, 인물과 작가의 분열을 통해 1987년 6월의 혁명이 한국사회의 모순을 시민계급의 욕망으로 봉합한 타협의 약속임을 예언한다.

영문 초록

The evergreen pine is a work embodied by the ambitious goal of a full-fledged novel, which is repeatedly addressed in Kim Won-il’s novel. The artist traces Seok Ju-yul, the process of mental growth of the independence activist from the slave in the binary opposing world of the Japanese colonial period through the The evergreen pine. Through the teachings of the Confucian scholar and his master, Baek Sang-chung, the celadon rate jumped into an armed independence struggle, and then after various ideas and religions, he realized the value of life and built a self-sufficient community and died by the Japanese police. His community movement, which sought to find a third way in the world of absolute binary opposition, was still an important task in Korean society in the late 1980s. The revolution of June 1987 was a community movement to break the contradictions of the nation and the class that started from colonial modernity and to build a new society. However, the revolutionary song that resonated in the square in June was a dissonance with a mixture of various tunes. When the nomenclature of time was settled over time, the revolution was a declaration of compromise and promise, faithful to the desires of civil society. The evergreen pine was presented as a full-fledged novel focusing on the inner vision and integration of the civil classes at the inflection point of the Korean society and embodied the vision of its integration as a Seok Ju-yul’s community movement. However, Seok Ju-yul, a colonial resident from slavery, can not reach the growth and cultivation he had hoped for and at the same time the artist Kim Won-il dreamed of. He lives with a lot of ascetic knowledge and thoughts and a strict ascetic life, but his inside is torn apart by a sense of survival. Unlike the main character of Western bildungsroman, he was not able to have such a community whose identity was embodied until the last time. In short, The evergreen pine proved the closure and contradiction of the civil society inherent in traditional bildungsroman as a crack in the narrative itself, and the revolution of June 1987, through the division of characters and writers, prophesy is a promise of compromise sealed with desire of bourgeoisie.
