국문 초록

임철우 초기 소설에는 인물 간의 감각적 소통이 매우 풍부하게 형상화되고 있다. 그것은 작가론적 맥락에서 임철우 초기 소설의 고유한 특징이라 할 만하다. 그런데 그러한 감각 소통의 형상화 맞은편에는 ‘벽’으로 일컬어지는 폐쇄된 공간에 고립된 인물이 공통적으로 형상화되고 있다. 그것은 폐쇄적 공간에 갇혀있다는 느낌에서 비롯되는 공간 감정으로서 80년 오월 광주 및 50년 한국전쟁에 따른 분단체제와 긴밀한 관련을 지닌다. 고립은 소통을 열망하게 하는바, 임철우는 감각의 촉수가 발달해있는 인물을 다수 형상화하고, 또 감각적 예민함을 동력으로 삼아 서사를 전진시켜나갔다. 그의 초기 소설에서는 시각, 청각, 후각, 촉각 등의 감각 소통이 두루 나타나 중요한 역할을 한다. 그러한 감각 소통은 타자의 절대적 타자성을 인식하게 하거나, 어두운 기억을 소환하여 현재의 트라우마를 해명해주거나, 과거와 현재의 서사를 겹층으로 포개면서 서사 전개를 풍요롭게 하거 나, 대상과의 충만한 교감을 이끌어내거나 하는 식으로 작용하여 서사에 서정적 생기를 불어넣는다. 그리하여 감각 소통은 폐쇄적 공간에 갇혀있는 주체의 타자에 대한 열망을 효과적으로 재현할 수 있게 하는바, 궁극적으로는 서사 전개 과정에서 과거와 현재의 낙차를 좁히고 그리하여 인물의 정체성과 진정성을 회복하도록 유도하는 기능을 한다. 임철우는 여러 초기 소설의 종결 부분에서 인간의 얼굴에 대한 열망을 자주 형상화하기도 했다. 그의 소설은 고립감과 감각 소통의 형상화에 덧붙여 궁극적인 주제의식을 강조할 수 있는 인간의 얼굴에 대한 열망으로 서사를 종결하고 있다. 즉 임철우는 폭력의 세계에 맞서 절대적으로 존중되어야 하는 타인의 얼굴을 만나고 소통하며, 궁극적으로는 생활세계의 윤리를 회복하고자 했던 것이다.

영문 초록

In the early novels of Lim Cheol-woo, sensory communication between characters is very rich. It is a unique feature of Lim Cheol-woo’s early novels in the context of the author’s entire works. On the opposite side of emboding such sensory communication, the persons isolated from the closed space is commonly referred to as a “wall”. It is a spatial emotion resulting from the feeling of being trapped in a closed space, closely related to Gwangju in May of 1980 and to the division system under the 1950 Korean War. The isolation drives communication, while Lim Cheol-woo embodies many characters with developed senses and uses sensory sensitivity to advance the narrative. In his early novels, sensory communication such as vision, hearing, smell, and touch play an important role. Such sensory communication can make other’s absolute otherness, or recall dark memories to explain the current trauma, or make the past and the present narrative lines in a layered manners, or enriching progress of narrative, or drawing out communion with the objects. Sensory communication effectively reproduces the desire of trapped subject in a closed space to meet and commune other, ultimately narrowing the gap between the past and the present in narrative process, and thus inducing the characters to regain his or her identity and authenticity. Lim Cheol-woo has often written the desire for human faces at the closing of several early novels. His novels closes the narrative with a desire for a human face to emphasize the ultimate theme, in addition to the formulation of isolation and sensory communication. In other words, Lim Cheol-woo wanted to meet and communicate with the faces of others who should be absolutely respected against the world of violence, and ultimately restore the ethics of life-world.
