국문 초록

그동안 황순원 문학 연구는 ‘서정성’을 중심으로 논의되어 왔다. 하지만 이러한 논의는 작가의 작품세계를 “초월주의” 혹은 “진공관의 논리”등으로 한정시키는 결과를 가져 왔다. 이에 본 논문에서는 기존 황순원 작품에 대한 논의에서 중요하게 다루어지지 않았던 공간 연구를 통해 작품 내부에 존재하고 있는 작가의 현실 인식과 변화 양상을 재조명하고자 한다. “각자의 사회는 저마다의 공간을 생산한다.”는 앙리 르페브르의 주장처럼 공간은 소설 작품의 내·외부적인 요소들과 직·간접적으로 관계하며 적극적으로 의미를 생산해 낸다. 즉 작품 내부에 재현되는 공간들은 단순히 서사적 배경에 그치는 것이 아니라 작가가 가지고 있는 현실에 대한 인식을 살펴볼 수 있는 중요한 단서이다. 황순원의 단편소설에 나타나는 공간의 재현 양상은 크게 세 가지로 구분될 수 있다. 첫째, 절대공간으로 규정할 수 있는 신화적 공간. 둘째, 목가적 가치를 지니고 있는 근원 공간. 셋째, 주체가 머물 수 있는 정주공간이 그것이다. 본 논문은 황순원 단편소설에서 나타나는 이 세 가지 양상의 공간에 대한 분석을 통해 작가의 작품이 ‘서정성’의 영역에서 안주하고 있는 것이 아니라 시대 변화에 대한 명확한 인식과 현실에 대한 고민 또한 내포하고 있음을 규명하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This study sets out to analyze the meanings of spaces and discuss their changing patterns in Hwang Soon-won’s short stories. Previous studies on his literature has focused on “lyricism,” one of the important characteristics of his works, but these discussions has been criticized for “transcendentalism” and “logic of a vacuum tube.” The present study thus decided to analyze the spaces in his early short stories, which has been discussed relatively less and examine their changing patterns, shedding new light on his awareness of reality inside his works. As Henri Lefebvre argues “Every society-and, therefore, every mode of production-produces a certain space, its own space,” spaces form direct and indirect relations with internal and external elements of novels and reproduce meanings actively. That is, spaces reproduced in a writer’s works do more than remaining as simple narrative backgrounds and offer critical clues to look into his awareness of reality. In his short stories, there are three major patterns of reproducing a space: first, mythical spaces defined as absolute space; second, premodern spaces with pastoral values; and finally, settlement spaces where the subjects can stay. The present study analyzed these three types of spaces and demonstrated that his works did not settle down in the domain of “lyricism” and had his clear awareness of changes of the times and worries over the reality connoted in them.
