『学問のすすめ』ㄴの成立背景と実学に 関する一考察

국문 초록

福沢諭吉の著書[学問のすすめ]の初編の冒頭の一節である｢天は人の上に 人を造らず人の下に人を造らずと言えり｣は伝聞調であり、アメリカの独立宣 言を念頭に置いたものであろうと推測されている。つまり、近代の開始を告げる人権宣言、権利の平等の宣言である。そして、第二編の表題として挙げ た｢人は同等なる事｣ということがその真意を伝えていると思う。福沢は｢同等とは有様の等しきを言うに非ず権理通義の等しきを言うなり｣としている。 ここにおいて有様と権理通義との区別は重要である。有様の方は｢固より同じかるべからず｣としている。従って、その規範的な意味は、｢有様の 不同なるが故にとて他の権理を害するにあらずや｣としながら｢何らの事あ るも人力をもってこれを害すべからず｣としている点である。 このように福沢諭吉の著書[学問のすすめ]を読むとそこに書かれている のは、きたるべき社会において有様として貴賤貧富を決めるは学問の有無 であるという。今日の言葉で言えば階級の構成原理であること、特に初編 の最後の文を見れば学問さえすれば富貴になれるとも言っている。 こうした福沢の主張は学問をすすめ、学問に勉めることは富貴のための実学であり、それを実践すれば現実的な豊かさや富貴がものにできるとも読み取れる。 本稿では、このような観点から福沢諭吉が[学問のすすめ]を著述した背景を考察しながら各編の文章の内容から読み取れる福沢諭吉の実学的な思想を考察したいと思う。

영문 초록

Yukichi Fukuzawa’s Gakumon-no Susume (An Encouragement of Learning) starts with the phrase Ten-wa hito-no ue-ni hito-o tsukurazu, hito-no shita-ni hito-o tsukurazu-to ieri. This part is written in the hearsay style, and it is presumed that Fukuzawa wrote it while considering the United States Declaration of Independence. That is, it is regarded as the declaration of human rights and human equality, indicating the rise of the modern time. This is particularly reflected in the title of the second volume, hito-　wa doutounaru-koto. Fukuzawa states that doutou-to-wa ariyou-no hitoshiki-o iu-ni arazu, kenri-tsuugi-no hitoshiki-o iunari. It is important to distinguish ariyou ‘state’ from kenri-tsuugi ‘basic human rights.’ The former is clarified as moto-yori onajikaru-bekarazu. Therefore, its prescriptive meaning is specified as nanra-no koto aru-mo jinriki-o motte kore-o gaisubekarazu, while it is also interpreted as ariyou-no hudounaru-ga yueni-tote hoka-no kenri-o gaisuru-ni arazu-ya. Thus, what is emphasized in An Encouragement of Learning is that it is the presence of absence of learning that determines the “high or low” and the “rich or poor” in the coming era. In today’s words, this can be interpreted as the constituting principle of classes. In particular, the final sentence of the first volume tells that the practice of learning makes people rich and honorable. This part of Fukuzawa’s claim is taken to mean that it encourages people to learn and it makes them rich and honorable, and that the richness and honorability will accrue to those who practice this learning process. In this article, we explore Fukuzawa’s thought on practical learning by analyzing the passages of each volume of An Encouragement of Learning and by examining the writing background of this piece of work.
