국문 초록

본 연구는 2015 개정교육과정에 따른 초등 영어교과서의 분석에 나타난 문화내용을 파악하고, 원격협력학습에서 초등학생들이 선호하는 문화주제를 분석하여, 원격협력학습을 할 때 고려해야 할 문화내용에 대한 제안을 하는데 목적이 있다. 연구의 수행을 위해 초등영어 검정 교과서 2종을 바탕으로 문화유형 및 소재를 분석하고, 원격 협력학습에 참여하고 있는 초등학생들에게 설문을 실시하여 학습자의 문화주제에 대한 선호도를 알아보았다. 자료 분석의 타당도를 높이기 위해 양적 자료과 질적 자료를 수집하여 혼합 연구방법(mixed method)으로 분석하였다. 초등 교과서에 나타난 문화 내용을 유형별로 분류하여 빈도를 구하고, 이를 학생들의 선호도와 비교하였다. 학생들의 설문 응답을 코딩하여 주요한 주제를 도출하였다. 교과서 분석결과 교과서의 문화내용은 행동문화, 정신문화, 물질문화, 인물문화 순으로 빈도가 높았다. 학년별로는 5학년에 행동문화가 많이 나타나는 경향이 있었다. 초등학생들은 원격협력학습 전에는 물질문화에 관심을 많이 보였지만 학습 후에는 행동문화에 대한 관심이 높아진 것으로 나타났다. 원격협력학습은 학생들이 교과서에서 다루지 않은 정신문화를 학습할 수 있는 기회를 제공하기 때문에 이를 고려하여 원격협력학습의 문화내용을 고안할 필요가 있음을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the cultural content of elementary school English textbooks and to identify the cultural topics preferred by elementary school students. Two English textbooks were selected and analyzed in terms of the cultural type and cultural topic. A survey was administered to 118 elementary school students who participated in the telecollaborative exchange project from May to December 2017. To ensure the validity of the analysis, this study collected both quantitative and qualitative data. The frequency of the cultural type contained in the elementary school textbook was quantified and compared with the frequency of students’ preferred cultural content. Students’ open-ended responses were then coded to identify important themes in their responses. The results showed that the most frequently occurring cultural type in both textbooks was behavioral culture content, followed by spiritual culture content. The students who participated in the telecollaborative exchange project showed more interest in material culture before the telecollaborative exchanges; however, they showed increased preference for behavioral culture after the telecollaborative exchanges. The findings suggest that students’ preferred cultural content should be reflected in design of a telecollaborative exchange program, as such a telecollaborative program could be a useful mean of raising students’ awareness of cultural diversity.
