석재 서병오의 불교적 성향과 불교 관련 서예 연구

국문 초록

석재(石齋) 서병오(徐丙五, 1862~1936)는 근대기 대구에서 활동한 시서화 삼절의 서화가이다. 서병오는 사찰을 자주 찾았고 해인사 환경(幻鏡), 통도사 경봉(鏡峰) 등 선사들과 유불(儒佛)과 승속(僧俗)을 넘어 교류하였다. 스스로 ‘아고호불(我固好佛)’이라고 하였듯 진사과에 급제한 유가 지식인 서병오의 행적에서는 불교적 성향이 많이 발견된다. 서병오가 불교적 성향을 갖게 된 원인을 절집에 살며 과거 공부를 한 어린시절, 그가 존경한 시불(詩佛) 왕유(王維), 동파(東坡) 소식(蘇軾), 추사(秋史) 김정희 등이 모두 불교를 좋아했다는 점, 유학과 불교의 상보적 관계 등으로 살펴보았다. 서병오는 불교 관련 시서화 작품을 많이 남겼다. 불교와 연관되는 시를 지었고, 불교적 상징을 갖는 연꽃, 파초 등도 즐겨 그렸다. 서예로는 경봉스님이 거처한 <삼소굴(三笑窟)>편액을 비롯한 사찰 현판을 남겼으며, 불경의 문구를 쓰기도 했고, 환경스님께 증여한 <환경> 등 승려와 관련된 작품도 남겼다. 서병오는 시서화를 즐기며 유유자적한 풍류적 삶을 살았다. 불교의 ‘공(空)’은 유가 지식인이면서도 경세와 도덕에 몰입하지 않았던 서병오의 삶을 이끈 진원으로서 그의 인생관, 세계관에 유학보다 더 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 이 연구는 서병오와 불교의 관련성을 논한 최초의 논문으로 서병오의 불교적 성향을 알려주는 흔적이자 결과물이라고 할 수 있는 불교 관련 서예 작품을 살펴보았다.

영문 초록

Seokjae Seo Byeong-oh is a calligraphic painter who was active in early modern Daegu. Seo Byeong-oh, who was considered as an confucian intellectual, it is found that his overall attitude towards Buddhism was far from rejection and even showed his favorable impression on Buddhism. Seo Byeong-oh often visited Buddhist temples and became close, beyond the inter-relationship of the clergy and the laity, with monk Whankyeong in Haeinsa temple and monk Kyeongbong in Tongdosa temple. Seo Byeong-oh left Buddhism-related poetry, calligraphy and paintings. He left some temple tablets which are called , being a place where monk Kyeongbong resided for over 55 years, and some verses carved on planks. He also left some calligraphic works which are related to Buddhism such as , the buddhist name of monk Whankyeong. Several reasons why Seo Byeong-oh liked Buddhism so much have been researched as follows; he studied at a temple house to pass the state examination during his childhood, the buddhist poet from Tang Dynasty, Wangyou, whom Seo Byeong-oh respected, Sosik, the great writer from Song Dynasty, Chusa Kim Jeong-hee from Joseon Dynasty, they all had Buddha in their minds, and the complementary relationship between Confucianism and Buddhism. For Seo Byeong-oh, as a confucian intellectual, the emptiness(空) of Buddhism has had a greater influence on his view of life and his view of the world than Confucianism itself. His artistic pathos, incubated in the trace of wheels of pompous life, was tied down nowhere, and so the natural straightforward inexorable works could come out through the accidental willingness.
