영남 남인 권상일의 정치사회적 활동과 위상

국문 초록

권상일은 퇴계 이황에 대한 존숭과 계승 의식이 매우 투철하였고, 영남지역과 영남인에 대한 관심과 자부심도 대단히 컸던 영남 남인 관료이자 학자였다. 그가 활동한 숙종대 후반에서 영조대에 이르는 시기는 영남 남인이 중앙 정계에서 실세한 시기였다. 영남 남인의 지도자였던 이현일이 죄인의 굴레에서 벗어나지 못한 상태였던 데다가 영조 초년에 일어난 무신란戊申亂에 남인이 대거 가담한 사실로 인해 매우 엄혹한 시국이었다. 다행히 권상일은 위의 두 가지에서는 약간 벗어난 위치에 있었다. 지역적으로도 상주 지역에 거주하면서 이현일과 사승관계를 가지고 있지 않았으며, 무신란 때는 전라도 수령으로 있으면서 오히려 난을 진압하는 데 일정한 공을 세운바 있었기 때문이다. 이러한 배경에서 그는 영남 남인을 대표할 수 있는 존재로 주목받기 시작하였다. 특히 영조대에 탕평책의 시행으로 남인의 등용이 일부 이루어지는 시점을 맞이하여서는 집권층과 영조로부터 특별한 대우를 받았다. 붕당간의 균형 위에 군림하려는 의도를 가진 영조에게 영남지역의 남인은 노론의 독주를 견제하기 위한 하나의 방안이 될 수 있었다. 그 영남 남인 중에서 학문적 실력과 문과 출신이라는 좋은 조건을 가진 이가 권상일이었다. 그의 위상은 더 높아질 수 있었다. 권상일이 정계로부터 받은 주목은 평소 근기지역 남인이나 소론과의 교류를 통해 다져진 신의에서 비롯된 것임은 물론이다. 근기 남인 출신의 이만부가 상주에 내려와 살게 되면서 맺은 인연이 소중한 연결 고리가 되었다. 결국 권상일은 ‘영남’과 ‘경남’의 교류라는 전통을 계승 유지하여 다음 세대에까지 이어질 수 있도록 자신에게 주어진 소명과 역할을 수행한 점에 역사적 의미를 부여할 수 있다. 그것도 단순한 교류에 그치지 않고 이황의 학문을 지키려는 노력 속에서 이루어진 것이기 때문에 영남 남인 사회 내에서 일정한 의미를 가졌다고 하겠다. 그러나 조정에서 제대로 포부를 펼치기에는 남인의 힘이 약하였으며, 그 자신도 너무 연만한 상태였다는 점은 한계였다.

영문 초록

Cheongdae Gwon Sang-il was a Namin(南人) government official and scholar that had the most thorough reverence and will for the succession of Toigye Lee Hwang and exhibited considerable interest and pride in the Youngnam(嶺南) region and its people. He made several difficult attempts at the state exam, finally passing it and holding a government position. Since the Youngnam Namins no longer dominated in the central political arena those days, his life as a government official was naturally not a smooth one. During the reign of King Sukjong, Lee Hyeon-il, the leader of the Youngnam Namins, failed to escape from the yoke of being a criminal, meaning that those who were under his influence had to suffer. Moreover, they were subjected to an even harsher ordeal due to the fact that many Namins were involved in the revolt by military officials in the early days of King Yeongjo s rule. It was fortunate that Gwon was slightly distant from those two events. He was from Sangju, distant from Ahndong, and did not learn under Lee Hyeon-il. During the revolt by military officials, he made some contributions to the suppression of the revolt as the Suryeong of Jeolla Province. In that background, he started to attract attention as a figure to represent the Youngnam Namins. When King Yeongjo decided to appoint some Namins according to his Tangpyeong policy, he received special treatment from the ruling class as well as the king. Having the intention of ruling over the balance of factions, King Yeongjo found a solution to check the solo lead of the Norons in the Namins of the Youngnam region. It was Gwon that was equipped with desirable conditions including outstanding academic skills and literary background among the Youngnam Namins. Supported by those circumstances, his status grew higher and higher. Gwon attracted attention from the political circles because he earned trust from the Namins and Sorons in the Geungi area by having exchanges with them. He made connections with Lee Man-bu, who was a Namin from Geungi and moved to Sangju, and the connections became a valuable link for him. He devoted himself to his call and roles to inherit and maintain the heritage of exchanges between the “Youngnam Namins” and “Geungi Namins” and pass it down to the next generation, thus claiming certain historical significance. He did not remain at the level of simple exchanges and made further efforts to preserve the study of Lee Hwang, thus claiming certain significance in the society of the Youngnam Namins, as well. Those findings indicate that Gwon Sang-il held the status of leader of the Youngnam Namins during a difficult time. He, however, had limitations too partly because the power of the Namins was too weak to implement their ambitions at the central political circle and partly because he was in advanced old age.
