『청대일기』를 통해 본 권상일의 서원활동

국문 초록

본 논문은 『청대일기』를 중심으로 권상일의 서원활동을 검토하였다. 서원에 대해서는 많은 연구성과에도 불구하고, 향촌사회에 있어서 서원의 구체적인 실상 및 재지사림들의 향촌사회 내 서원활동 등에 대한 해명은 미흡한 실정이다. 『청대일기』는 18세기 전반 영남을 대표하는 학자인 권상일의 상주지역 내에서의 서원활동을 구체적으로 파악할 수 있는 중요한 내용을 담고 있다는 점에서 사례연구의 조건을 갖추고 있다. 권상일은 18세기 상주지역 나아가 영남남인을 대표하는 관료이자 학자였다. 그는 32세에 과거에 합격하여 출사하였지만, 관직 생활보다는 향촌에서 독서하면서 후진을 양성하는데 힘을 쏟았다. 그는 南老로 향론이 분열된 상주지역에서 남인계 서원인 近巖書院과 道南書院을 중심으로 활발한 교육활동을 하였다. 권상일의 서원활동은 점차 상주지역을 넘어 남인계의 중심인 안동권의 서원으로 확대되어 나갔다. 권상일의 영남 내 위상은 그가 경상좌 우도를 대표하는 도산 덕천 두 서원의 원장으로 추대된 것에서도 알 수 있다. 권상일은 평생 동안 근암 도남서원 두 서원을 중심으로 활발한 교육활동을 하였는데, 그가 행한 서원교육은 과거공부가 아닌 강학이 중심이었다. 이는 서원에서의 공부는 ‘위기지학’이여야 한다는 퇴계 서원론을 계승해야 한다는 뜻이 담겨져 있다고 본다. 이와 같은 권상일의 교육활동은 이상정이 주도한 안동 廬江書院에서의 강학활동과 더불어 18세기 영남 서원의 대표적인 강학활동으로 기록되었다.

영문 초록

He purpose of this study is to examine Gwon Sang-il’s Seowon activity based on 『Cheongdaeilgi』. Although there has been a lot of research on Seowon, it is not enough to investigate the detailed aspects of Seowon in local societies or the Seowon activities of local Sarim in the local societies. 『Cheongdaeilgi』 is equipped with conditions for a case study as it has crucial contents to figure out the detailed Seowon activities of Gwon Sang-il, one of the scholars representing Yeongnam(嶺南) in the former 18th century, in Sangju(尙州). Gwon Sang-il is a bureaucrat and scholar representing the 18th-century Sangju and even Yeongnam Namin(嶺南南人) well. Although he passed the Gwageo(科擧) exam at the age of 32 and entered the government, he read books in the countryside instead of being in public office to make ways for younger men. In Sangju where Hyangron(鄕論) was divided into Nam No(南人老論), he conducted positive educational activities mainly in Geunam Seowon(近嵒書院) and Donam Seowon(道南書院), the Namin-line Seowon(南人系書院). Gwon Sang-il’s Seowon activities were gradually extended to not only Sangju but Seowon in Andong, the center of the Namin line, too. We can assume the status of Gwon Sang-il in Yeongnam with the fact that he was inducted into the head of the two Seowon, Dosan(陶山書院) and Deokcheon(德川書院), representing the left and right provinces of Gyeongsang. In his entire life, Gwon Sang-il did aggressive educational activities mainly in the two Seowon, Geunam and Donam Seowon, and Seowon education he conducted was not for Gwageo but about Ganghak(講學). This implies that he followed Toegye(退溪)’s Seowon-ron(書院論) that studying in Seowon should be ‘Wigijihak(爲己之學)’. Gwon Sang-il’s educational activities were recorded as Ganghak activities which Lee Sang-jeong(李象靖) led in Andong(安東) Yeogang Seeowon(廬江書院) and also Ganghak activities representing the 18th-century Yeongnam Seowon.
