우리나라 영어 사교육 현장에 내재된 영어 식민주의: 초등 어학원의 사례

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 초등 영어 사교육 기관 종사자들의 영어교육에 대한 인식과 그들 간의 관계 속에서 벌어지는 사건들 속에 잠재되어 있는 식민주의의 양상을 해석하고 비판적으로 탐색하는 것이다. 이를 위해 예비 연구를 거쳐 초등 사설 영어 학원 관리자 2명, 원어민 강사 2명, 한국인 강사 2명을 대상으로 2017년 5-6월에 개인당 50-60분간 정성적 연구방법인 반구조화 면담을 실시하였다. 수집된 자료는 근거이론 (grounded theory)을 바탕으로 분석하였다. 본 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 관리자와 강사들 모두 영어는 경쟁 사회에서 생존을 위한 도구라고 인식하고 있었으며, 영어교육 시장의 과도한 수업료와 백인 우월주의에 대해 인식하고 있었다. 둘째, 원어민 강사와 한국인 강사에 대한 관리자들의 차별과 원어민 교사의 영어 사용과 문화자본에 대한 주관적 우위는 강사들 사이의 긴장을 심화시키는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구 결과는 영어와 관련된 불평등에 주목하는 비판적 영어교육과 세계 영어(World Englishes)에 대한 인식 고양이 필요함을 나타내며, 원어민 강사 채용 시 외 모와 혈통을 중시하는 백인 원어민 우월주의를 비판적으로 재고해야 함을 시사하고 있다

영문 초록

Globalization has compelled the English language to become the leading international language. The English language as a lingua franca enables people in the world to communicate in a common language. On the other hand, the spread of English aggravates the inequalities among various languages and cultures around the globe. The purpose of this study is to investigate the inherent colonialism existing in the perception of English education and the relationships among employees at a private elementary English language institute. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with two administrators, two native English teachers, and two nonnative teachers. Findings are as follows. Various characteristics of colonialism were identified among the staff. In their perception of English education, they recognized English as a tool for survival in a competitive society. In addition, all participants were keenly aware of excessive tuition fees and the existence of preferences for Caucasians in the practice of recruiting and employing English teachers. The administrators’ discrimination and native supremacy intensified tensions among the employees. It was also revealed that native teachers had subjective superiority in their use of the English language and exercised cultural capital. These results imply that there is a critical need for English education to focus on inequalities related to English and education for World Englishes, and to reconceptualize the notion of considering appearance and heritage in relation to the recruitment of teachers.
