국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 공공장소에 있는 텃밭(정원)과, 미국 공립학교의 커리큘럼을 탐 구하는 것이다. 본 연구를 위하여 미국에서 시행되었던 교내 텃밭의 역사와, 현재 미국의 텃밭이 어떻게 활용되고 있는지에 관한 연구를 기초로 하여 교내 텃밭의 시 행이 제공하는 효과와 이점에 대해서 분석하였다. 본 연구의 사례 대상은 미국의 공 립 학교나 공공기관의 텃밭이다. 공공기관에서 시행한 “The Edible Schoolyard”와 “The Garden Project” 등의 텃밭 활용의 구체적 사례와, 텃밭 관련 프로그램을 경험 한 학생, 선생님, 그리고 부모님들을 대상으로 실시한 설문조사 등의 연구를 조사하 였다. 예시로 든 사례의 종합적 분석을 통하여 공공기관에서 텃밭 교육을 시행하기 위한 전략, 텃밭 교육 시행이 제공하는 이점 및 사람들에게 미치는 영향, 텃밭 교육 을 시행하는 데 마주칠 수 있는 난제들, 텃밭 가꾸기와 환경의식 증진의 상관관계 등의 주제를 다룬 연구들의 비교 분석을 하였다. 이를 통하여 교내 텃밭 활용이 사 회에 미치는 영향에 관한 총체적인 이해와 예술교육으로서의 가치 및 이에 관한 후 속 연구의 방향을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this research is to investigate the use of gardens in America, especially those in public spaces, and schools. For this research, the effects and advantages of using gardens in school will be identified by reviewing researches conducted on the history of gardens in America, and how they are used. The examples studied in this research are all from public institutes and schools. “The Edible Schoolyard,” “The Garden Project” are some examples of such garden-based projects. Surveys conducted on students, teachers, and parents were also investigated to figure out specific use of gardens. By comprehensive investigation of the studies of examples, the strategies implemented by the public institutes, benefits of garden-based education and the efficacy of such program, problems that need to be overcome, and the relationship between environmental awareness and gardening are explored to gain general understanding of gardening in public schools. In addition, the research is to suggest that a garden can be used for art education. Many educational researches on gardening have been focused on science, farming, and dietetics. However, a garden is a place where many art educational achieve purposes can be achieved. From the research of vast areas of gardening, suggestions and guidance made for future research is necessary.
