국문 초록

본고의 목적은 한국 개신교선교사 게일(James Scarth Gale)의 한국문학 세계화 기획을 살펴보는 것이다. 본고는 ‘한국문학의 세계화 기획’ 그 자체 역시 어떠한 특정한 시기에 형성된 역사적 사건이라는 관점에서, 게일이 미 의회도서관에 남긴 흔적을 주목했다. 이 흔적을 고찰하며 오늘날의 상황과는 다른 게일의 한국문학 세계화 기획이 놓여 있던 당대 역 사와 그 현장, 그 일면을 묘사해보고자 했다. 미 의회도서관에 소장된 경판본 고소설과 게일의 서한문은 캐나다 토론토대 토마스피셔 희귀본장서실(Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library) 게일 유고(James Scarth Gale Papers)에 집성된 한국고전 번역물의 존재이유를 말해준다. 비록 이는 당시의 여건 상 이루어질 수 없는 미완의 기획이었지만, 동아시아 속 한국문명 과 한국문학을 세계에 전하고자 한 게일의 소망을 증언해주기 때문이다. 미 의회도서관에 소장된 경판본 고소설은 [게일 유고]에 소장된 게일 고소설 번역본의 저본이었다. 더불어 한국의 한문전적과 함께 일종의 보존해야 될 문화유산 또한 근대화 이전 변모되기 이전 ‘옛 조선의 문학’이라는 함의를 지니고 있었다. 이와 관련하여 게일이 활자본이 아니라 경판본을 번역저본으로 선택하고, 이를 한 편의 문학작품이라는 관점에서 번역하고자 한 지향점이 형성된 근본적 계기를 살폈다. 그것은 고소설을 비롯한 한국문화에 내재된 한문전통을 ‘중국적이며 외래적인 것’이 아니라 한국이 스스로 동아시아 속에서 공유한 고전세계이자 고유한 문명으로 인식하는 게일의 새로운 모습이었다. 이러한 인식의 전환은 그의 한국문학 세계화 기획에 있어 중요한 하나의 형성 계기였다. 미 의회도서 관에 소장된 게일의 서한문을 통해, 게일 유고에 책자형태로 묶여진 원고들이 해외출판을 위해 게일이 예비한 번역물이라는 사실을 확인할수 있었다. 비록 게일의 한국문학 세계화 기획은 결과적으로 본다면 미완의 기획이라고 평가할 수 있겠지만, 그의 기획 속에는 중국과 구별되는 한국문명에 대한 그의 발견 그리고 동양의 희랍이라고 명명했던 한국 고전의 가능성과 미래가 분명히 존재했다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine the project of the protestant missionary, James Scarth Gale to globalize Korean literature. This paper focused on the traces left by Gale in the US Library of Congress in the sense that ‘the project of globalizing Korean literature’ itself is a historical event that happened at a certain period of time. Walking through the traces, this study tried to describe the history and scene that Gales project was placed in. The old novels and Gale s letters kept in the US Library of Congress tell the reason for the existence of Korean classical translations gathered in James Scarth Gale Papers, which are housed in Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library of Toronto University in Canada. Although it was an unfinished project that could not be completed under the circumstances of the time, it testifies to Gale s desire to spread the Korean civilization and Korean literature in the East to the world. The old novels housed in the US Library of Congress were the original scripts of the translation of Gale s old novels from James Scarth Gale Papers. In addition, they had the implications as a cultural asset that should be preserved and ‘the literature of the old Korea’ before modernization along with the texts written in Chinese letters. Regarding this, this study examined the basic motivation that Gale chose the plate version, not the printed version as its original script for translation and pursued to translate it as a literary work. It is a new approach of Gale, which recognized the Chinese tradition inherited in Korean culture including the old novels as the classical world that Korea shared in East Asia and as its unique civilization, rather than as something ‘Chinese and foreign’. This shift in perception was an important moment in his planning of globalizing his Korean literature. Gale s letter in the US Library of Congress showed that the manuscripts in the form of booklets in James Scarth Gale Papers were translation that Gale prepared for publishing abroad. Although Gale s project of globalization of Korean literature could eventually be regarded as an unfinished project, his project clearly shows his discovery of Korean civilization that is distinct from China and the possibility and future of Korean classics, which he called the Eastern Greece.
