김승옥의 ‘60년대式’ 생존방식

국문 초록

김승옥의 <60년대식>은 서사적 완성도나 미학적 성취가 미흡하다는 이유로 그동안 그의 작품 목록에서도 저평가 되고, 주목받지 못한 작품이다. 그러나 이 작품이 지나치게 세태묘사에 치중했으며 서사가 짜임새있기보다는 나열하는 느낌이 강하다는 기존의 평가를 일부 인정하더라도 1960～1970년대의 한국 사회의 모습을 당대를 대표했던 작가 김승옥 의 관점에서 묘파하고 있다는 의의는 사라지지 않는다. 더욱이 이 작품이 한국 사회에 대중사회론의 논의가 본격적으로 시작된 1968년을 배경으로 하여 대중이라 부를 수 있을만한 인물들을 전경화하고 있다는 점, 대중들에게 인기를 끌었던 선데이서울의 창간호에 실렸다는 점을 고려하면 이 작품은 한층 흥미롭게 읽어낼 수 있다. 당대의 사회적 맥락에서 읽었을 때, <60년대식>은 당대의 현실을 단순히 반영하여 재현하는 것에 그치지 않고 박정희 정권의 개발독재체제와 대중 사회의 도래라는 시대적 급변 앞에서 앞으로 한국 사회가 어떻게 변해갈 것인지를 징후적으로 포착하고 있다. 특히 이 작품은 산업사회의 초기적 단계로 접어들던 당시 한국 사회에 불어 닥친 자본주의적욕망이 어떤 새로운 인간형을 주조해냈는지를 잘 보여준다. 본고에서는 이들을 자신의 욕망을 주체적으로 추구하는 ‘대중’이자 자기 자신을 자 본으로 경영․관리하는 ‘호모 에코노미쿠스’의 전신(前身)으로 파악하여 1960～1970년대의 시대상을 살펴보았다. 한편, 자본에 대한 욕망과 그것이 불러일으키는 갈등이라는 주제는 김승옥의 앞선 작품들에서도 일관되게 발견되는 것으로 <60년대식>에서 그것은 전면에 대두되었을 뿐만 아니라 이전과는 다른 방식으로 전화한다. 더 이상 순수와 현실의 이분법적 세계 사이의 갈등에서 죄의식의 경제를 통한 극복은 통용되지 않으며, 차라리 노골적으로 현실 세계에 부응하는 삶의 방식이 긍정된다. 만 이틀 동안의 서울 여행이 도인에게 준 새로운 깨달음을 김승옥의 작품을 전체적으로 놓고 보았을 때 그에게 어떤 인식의 전환을 가져온 것으로 읽힌다.

영문 초록

Kim Seung-ok s <60s style> was undervalued in his work list because of its lack of narrative completeness or aesthetic achievement. However, even if this work is overly focused on depiction and some recognition of the existing evaluation that the narrative is stronger than the structure, the significance that it shows the appearance of Korean society in the 1960s ～ 1970s from the point of view of the writer Kim Seung does not disappear. Furthermore, this work was introduced to the public in 1968, when the debate of popular society began in earnest in the Korean society. And it was published in the first issue of the Sunday Seoul, which attracted the attention of the public. Considering these things, this work would be read more interestingly. When I read it in the social context of the time, <60s style> does not only reflect and represent the reality of the that time but also caught how the Korean society will change in the face of sudden changes in the dictatorship system and mass society in the Park Chung Hee regime symptomatically. In particular, this work shows how a capitalist desire that has come to Korean society at the time of entering the early stage of industrial society cast a new humanoid form. In this article, I looked at the era of the 1960s and 1970s by identifying them as the “masses” who pursue their desires in a subjective way, and as the predecessors of “Homo Economick”, which manages and manages itself as capital. On the other hand, the theme of the desire for capital and the conflict it causes is consistently found in the works of Kim Seung-ok. In the 60s, it not only emerges in front but also transform in a different way. In the conflict between the pure and reality of the dichotomical world is not working, and overcoming the throung the economy of guilt - consciousness is also not prevailing, but rather the way of life that responds plainly to the real world is affirmed. It seems that a two-day trip in Seoul brought a new awareness to Do-in, and also to the writer Kim Seung-ok.
