Differences of Grammatical Categoriesof Nouns and Noun Phrases in Korean and Bulgarian: potential Implications for Applied Linguistics

국문 초록

이 논문에서는 필자가 한국어와 불가리아어의 명사와 명사구의 문법 범주를 대조하여 분석한다. 명사와 명사구의 문법범주는, 한국어와 불가리아어 사이에 형태론적으로도 통사론적으로도 차이점이 많다. 불가라아어의 명사와 명사구는 성, 수, 인칭, 한정/부정 (definiteness / indefiniteness) 등, 대표적인 문법 범주가 있다고 할 수 있다. 한국어에는 불가리아어명사의 문법범주같은 문법범주가 없다. 그러나 한국어에서는 통사론과 의미론과 어용론의 인터페이스에 있는 뜻이 명사구에 형태적으로 반영된디고 할 수 있다. 예를 들면, 주어에 붙는 조사가 문장의 정보구조에 달려 있다. 이 차이점은 이론 언어학상도 응용 언어학상도 설명함에 어려운 점이 있다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The paper reviews the grammatical categories of nouns and noun phrases in Korean and Bulgarian. It outlines the major differences between the two languages in the morphology of nouns as well as in the syntax at the phrase level. Categories typical of Bulgarian, like grammatical gender, number, person, definiteness/ indefiniteness, etc, are not present in Korean, while Korean nouns and noun phrases use morphological means to express meanings at the interface of syntax, semantics and pragmatics, e.g. marking subjects with different particles depending on their status in the information structure of the sentence, a phenomenon which is alien to Bulgarian. These contrasts present challenges not only for the theoretical descriptions of the two languages but also in fields of applied linguistics like translation, interpretation, foreign language teaching and learning.
