“Kohyang”: Remembering Where I Am from: the Concept of Place of Origin in the Elaboration of Collective and Individual Memory in South Korea

국문 초록

이 글은 기억 연구법(memory studies approach)을 통해 한국인에게 ‘고향’이라는 단어가 가지는 의미에 대해 알아보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 모든 가족 구성원은 나름의 이야기와 자잔적 서사를 가지고 있으며 동시에 이 이야기들을 서로 유기적으로 연결되어 총체적이고 집합적인 가족의 기억 구성을 가능하게 한다. 따라서 ‘기억연구’라는 방법론적 접근을 통해 기억이 개인의 역사와 함께 개인을 다른 가족구성원과 결속시켜주는 계보적, 상징적 연결의 수단으로 어떻게 활용되는지에 대해 탐구할 수 있다. 우리가 기억의 산물이라면, 응당 우리 생활의 한 축인 공간 역시 기억의 일부이며 동시에 우리 자신을 이루는 요소라 할 수 있을 것이다. 그렇다면 가족 기억 서사에 내재한 공간에 대한 회상을 통해 가족 구성원 간에 쌓아온 관계를 탐색할 수 있을 것이며 동시에 이러한 친밀감과 적대감의 지속적인 ‘퇴적’은 가족의 화합을 도모하는 길이 될 수 있다. 본고에서는 ‘고향’에 대한 회상이 가족구성원의 친밀감 확대에 미치는 영향에 대해 탐색하고자 한다. 동시에 고향을 떠나 서울에서 살고 있는 한국 사람들에게 ‘고향’ 즉 가족의 근원이 가지는 형상적 의미와 한국사회의 주요 특성 중 하나인 지속적인 이동성이 개인의 자아 정체성 구성에 미치는 영향에 대해서도 살펴보려 한다.

영문 초록

This study attempts to look at definition of Kohyang in Korea, from a memory studies approach. This methodological approach can investigate how the memory is mobilized in order to reconstruct the history of the individual along with the genealogical and symbolic links that bind him or her to other members of the family. Each family member creates different stories and biographical narratives and, at the same time, these stories are related to each other, contributing to collectiveness in the memory-making within a family. If memories build what we are, then places, which are constantly a part of our life, are certainly part of our memories and therefore part of us. The reminiscence of places in the family memories looks at how the relationships among family members are built. They can also be a way for the group to be cohesive, a “sedimentation” of affinities as much as rivalries. My intent is to investigate to what extent the recollection of Kohyang can be a measure of family group cohesion; how the continuous mobility of Koreans throughout their lives can affect their self-construction; and if the native place or place of family origin is just an imagery construction for people living in Seoul.
