국문 초록

본 연구는 작가 정연두가 섬세한 수사법을 통해 현대사회에 전달하는 비판적 메시지를 분석한다. 본 고의 첫 번째 파트는, 작품 <수공기억> (2008)을 중점적으로 다룬다. <수공기억>은 아카이빙 (도큐멘팅, 수집)을 하나의 전략적 방식으로 채택하나, 아카이빙을 통해 역사를 논의하는 방식은 기존 작가들의 방식과 차별성을 지닌다. 본 연구는 <수공기억>의 아카이빙을 통해 생산된 내러티브에서, 역사적 진실이 효율성이라는 명목 아래 전치되는 과정을 집중적으로 분석하고, 이를 시대적 함의와 함께 논의한다. 본 고의 두 번째 파트는, 정연두의 그간 몇몇 작품에서 느껴지는 기이한 감정을 분석한다. 본 연구는 정연두의 독특한 매체 사용법-사진적 매체와 영화적 매체의 병치에 초점을 두고, 캐나다 작가, 제프 월의 작품과 비교, 분석한다. 이후 정연두가 매체 사용법을 통해 드러내는 현대사회에서 잃어버린 것이 무엇인지 짚어내고, 그가 우리의 동시대를 과거와 현재의 중간에 위치 설정하는 방식 (Location of T/Here and Now)과 그 의미를 논의한다.

영문 초록

This research demonstrates the way in which a South Korean artist, Yeondoon Jung makes a critical comment on our contemporary society through his complicated and nuanced visual rhetoric. The first part discusses Jung’s Handmade Memories (2008) by focusing on the contradictions presented in his archiving practice. That is, the project certainly archives (documents and collects) the oral memories passed by the elderly, yet it also transgresses the ontological meaning of an archive which seeks for a historical truth. Here, I argue that combined with the laborers’ working process on the screen, the South Korean elders’ language demonstrates how a truth-value has been displaced by effectiveness (more precisely, effecting truth) in Korean history. The second part explores why somewhat uncanny feelings emerge from Jung’s works in emphasis on his cross of media: from painting to photography, from photography to cinema. I examine the way in which Jung represents cinematic narrativity and photographic stasis in comparison with Jell Wall. Then I argue that Jung’s re-centering on the medium-specificity demonstrates the way in which he uses a medium as a form of remembering what we have forgotten.
