국문 초록

Plog의 모험성 이론이 발표된 지 40년이 지났으나 아직도 모험성 성격특성 척도를 다양한 문화 집단에 적용하지 못해서 Plog의 주장대로 모험성 척도의 보편타당성에 대한 평가가 미진하다. 본 연구의 목적은 모험성 이론이 한국인의 해외여행지 선택행동 및 관광행동에 대한 설명력을 갖는가를 실증적으로 검증하는 데 있다. 쿼터샘플링 방법을 기초로 전국의 20세 이상의 성인남녀 패널을 대상으로 온라인 설문조사를 실시하여 데이터를 취합ㆍ분석한 결과, Plog의 모험성 척도가 응답자의 실제 관광지 선택행동을 설명하는 데에는 한계가 있었으나 관광행동 전반에서 유의한 설명력이 있음을 보여주었다. 또한 모험성 성격특성이 개인의 관광수요에 유의미한 영향관계를 갖고 있었으며 수입과 기타 주요 통제변수보다 더 큰 설명력을 보이는 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

The concept of venturesomeness developed by Plog in probing why some people never fly has been treated as one of the most appraised tourism theories by tourism research community for its elegant simplicity and intuitive plausibility. There is, however, a dearth of empirical studies that test its validity across different populations other than North American and European travelers. In this study the actual Plog's venturesomeness scale was applied to Korean traveling population using on-line survey method among a national panel to verify the validity of the scale and its usefulness in explaining Korean travelers' destination choice decision and trip-related behaviors. The results of this study indicate a rather weak link between the venturesomeness of the respondents and their actual and ideal destination choices. In contrast, the venturesomeness of respondents' exert very clear explanatory power on their actual travel behaviors and individual tourism demand. The magnitude of influence of venturesomeness on tourism demand turned out to be larger than income and other travel constraint variables.
