노자 陰陽論의 문제

국문 초록

老子와 易傳의 관계는 고대로부터 주목을 끈 흥미로운 중국철학의 주제였다. 최근에 역전의 음양사상은 노자에서 기원하며, 역전은 儒家가 아닌 道家의 저작이라고 한 陳鼓應의 주장은 기존의 철학사적 상식을 뒤집는 것이라서 학계에 큰 반향을 불러일으켰다. 본고에서는 노자와 역전의 음양사상을 둘러싸고 벌어졌던 기존의 논의들을 비판적으로 검토하면서, ‘陰陽’과 ‘剛柔’라는 개념을 중심으로 노자와 역전의 음양 사상 및 그 관계 논리를 구체적으로 분석해보았다. 노자는 陽보다는 陰을 剛보다는 柔를 중시하는 尊陰貴柔의 논리를 펴는 반면에, 역전에서는 음양 강유가 동등하게 조화를 이루거나 陽剛에 陰柔가 순종해야한다는 논리를 주장한다. 이점에서 노자와 역전은 서로 반대된다고 할 수 있다. 뿐만 아니라 역전에서는 세계가 변화하는 원리를 음양관계속에서 파악하려한 반면에, 노자의 궁극적 관심은 음양을 넘어선 본체인 도에로 복귀하는 길을 찾는 것이었다. 노자가 말한 존음귀유 역시 존재의 근원인 도를 음/여성적인 것으로 비유한 것이다. 결론적으로 말하면 음을 강조한 노자의 음양사상은 양을 강조하는 역전과는 논리적으로 상충되며, 또한 음양의 근원인 도에로의 복귀를 추구하는 노자사상은 음양을 통해 만물의 변화를 설명하려한 역전의 음양사상과는 전연 다른 지평속에서 이해되어야 한다고 본다.

영문 초록

The relationship between Laozi and the Yi Zhuan has been one of the critical issues of Ancient Chinese Philosophy. Recently, Chen GuIng argued that the relationship between Yin and Yang in Yi Zhuan originated from Laozi, and the Yi Zhuan was written by the Taoist not by the Confucianist. This opinion, which overturned the commonly accepted view in the history of philosophy, created a significant resonance in the academic world. This paper critically examines a series existing theories about Laozi and the relationship of Yin and Yang in Yi Zhuan so as to thoroughly analyze their relational logic focusing on the concept of “Yin-Yang” and “Hardness and Softness.”Whereas Laozi’ logic places Yin above Yang, and Softness above Hardness, Yi Zhuan asserts that Yin and Yang, Hardness are Softness are equal harmonizing with one another or Yin and Softness should conform to Yang and Hardness. In this context, Laozi and the Yi Zhuan are opposed to each other. Also, while the Yi Zhuan attempts to explain the principle of changes in the world with the relationship between Yin and Yang, Laozi was ultimately interested in the return to Tao, the substance transcending Yin and Yang. Laozi’s emphasis on Yin and Softness implies that Yin or femininity the reflection of the nature of Tao. This paper, finally, illuminates that Laozi’s philosophy of Yin and Yang conflicts with the logic of the Yi Zhuan, and, therefore, Laozi’s pursuit of the ultimate return to Tao, the root of Yin and Yang, should be understood with a totally new perspective that is distinguished from the Yi Zhuan’s view on Yin and Yang.
