오태석 희곡 <자전거>의 증상과 환상

국문 초록

오태석의 희곡 <자전거>는 작가가 어린 시절에 체험한 한국전쟁의 기억을 바탕으로 지은 작품이다. 특히 친족 살해의 모티프를 통하여 동족상잔의 비극을 극적으로 표현한 작품으로 유명하다. 이 작품의 독창적인 의미를 분석하기 위해 많은 선행연구들이 이어져왔는데, 그 방향은 크게 두 가지의 관점에서 논의되어졌다. 첫째는 사건이 진행되는 독특한 극적 구성 방식을 분석하고자 한 것 이다. 기존의 논의에서는 주로 회상의 반복을 통해 숨겨진 사건의 실체를 드러내는 분석적 구성과, 서로 무관한 현재의 사건과 역사적 사건을 대비시켜 그 둘 사이의 내적 연관을 드러내는 대위법적 구성을 취하고 있음을 밝혀내었다. 본고는 이에 더하여 극의 구성이 네 차례의 회상과 재현으로 이루어졌으며, 그에 의해 최종적으로 재구성되는 외상 사건이 환상임을 밝힘으로써 현실과 역사와 환상이 뒤섞여 빚어내는 극적 진실을 분석하였다. 둘째는 복잡하게 얽힌 사건들 속에서 표출되는 주인공의 억압된 내면을 분석하고자 한 것이다. 기존의 논의에서는 주로 정신분석적 비평을 통해 근친살해에 따르는 죄의식을 분석하거나, 망각과 왜곡 작용에 의해 억압된 인물들의 무의식을 분석해내었다. 본고는 이에 더하여 주인공 윤서기가 가진 정신적 외상의 원인과 그것이 무의식의 심급에서 변형되는 과정, 그리고 그것이 의식의 층위에서 표현되는 방식을 밝히고자 하였다. 이를 위해 프로이트의 압축과 전치 개념을 발전시킨 라깡의 은유와 환유 개념 및 증상과 환상 개념을 활용하였다. 그러므로 어두운 밤길에 끌고 가는 자전거는 일제강점기와 한국전쟁, 그리고 극중 현재에 이르기까지 반복적으로 이어지는 비극적 역사가 응축된 은유이자 현실의 결여 앞에서 넘어져 결국 졸도하게 되는 증상이 된다. 그리고 라이터 불에서 촛불과 방화 사건으로 이어지는 불의 이미지는 그 결핍의 욕망이 미끄러져간 환유적 기표이자, 그것을 초극하여 불가능한 향유로 나아가려는 욕망이 낳은 환상이 된다. <자전거>는 그러한 무의식의 심급에 억압된 외상적 기억을 내러티브로 재구성함으로써 멜랑콜리적 애착 상태에서 벗어나 애도의 단계로 나아가는 과정임을 분석하였다.

영문 초록

Oh Tae-Seok's play, , was created based upon the writer's own memory on the Korean War, which experienced in his youth. The play is famous for its dramatic expression of the tragedy of fratricide via adopting the motive of parricide. A lot of advanced research have been conducted in order to analyze the original meaning of this play, and the discussions have taken two directions, each with its own perspective. The first perspective of the two aims to analyze the peculiar format of the play in which the events progress. The existing perspective has revealed the counterpoint method, which contrasts the irrelevant events of the present and of the history, revealing the internal relevance of the two, as well as the analytic method that mainly exposes the true nature of a hidden event by repeated recollection. Add to this, this study tried to analyze the dramatic truth which is mingled with reality, history and illusion by identifying that the truth of trauma which is finally recollected by the plot, conducting with fore times of flashback and replay, was illusion. The second perspective aims to analyze the hero's suppressed inner feelings that are expressed throughout the complicated events. The existing discussion mainly investigates the guilty conscience followed on from related murder via psychoanalytic criticism, or analyzes the subconsciousness of suppressed characters through application of oblivion and distortion. This article in addition intends to reveal the cause of the hero, official Yoon's trauma, and the process in which the trauma deforms in levels of subconsciousness, as well as the expression of it in the layers of consciousness. Freud's condensation and displacement concept, Lacan's metaphor and metonymy concept, and symptom and fantasy concepts were utilized for this purpose. Therefore, the bicycle that is carried in the dark roads is the compressed metaphor which is the Japan's occupation period, the Korean War and the tragic history which continues to the ‘present’ of the play, as well as a symptom that inflicts spillage over absence of reality. And the image of fire, depicted from the lighter onto the arson event, is a metonymic signifier in which the deficiency of greed is slipped, and is a fantasy given birth by the greed that was conquested to advance into the impossible possession. And this study figured out that the play is the process which is moving forward to the step of mourning from the mood of melancholy by recollecting the traumatic memories repressed in the unconscious condition as the narrative.
