국문 초록

이 논문은 최인훈의 연작 소설『소설가 구보 씨의 일일』이 놓인 문학사적 맥락을 살피는 것을 목적으로 한다. 최인훈은 박태원의 소설『소설가 구보 씨의 일일』의 소설적 스타일을 빌려 쓴 일련의 소설들을 발표하였고, 이들을 묶어『소설가 구보 씨의 일일』을 펴냈다. 잘 알려져 있는 것처럼 박태원은 전쟁 직후 월북했다. 다른 월북문인들과 마찬가지로 박태원의 작품은 출판이 금지되었고 그에 대한 학술적 논의를 하는 데도 상당한 제약이 뒤따르는 상황이었다. 그랬던 만큼 1970년대 상황에서 박태원의 원작을 스타일을 흉내 내는 것은 물론 제목까지 똑같이 따라서 작품을 쓰는 일의 의미는 그리 단순하지 않다. 여기에는 상당히 복잡한 정치적인 의미가 들어 있다. 이 논문은 이런 문제의식에 따라 1970년대에『소설가구보 씨의 일일』같은 작품을 쓰는 일의 의미가 무엇인지 살펴보려 하였다. 최인훈은 자전적 소설『화두』에 이와 관련한 이야기를 부분적으로 해놓았는데, 이를 참고하고 관련 사실을 덧붙여 논의를 진행하였다. 최인훈이『소설가 구보 씨의 일일』을 쓴 배경에는, 문학적 거울의 필요성, 단절된 문학사를 복원하고자 하는 생각, 박태원에게서 느낀 심정적 동질성,『소설가 구보 씨의 일일』이 지닌 형식에의 이끌림 같은 요인들이 있었던 것으로 보인다. 이 외에 박태원의 작품을 구해 읽을 수 있었던 점, 박태원이 월북문인들 가운데 비교적 온건한 축에 속한다는 점, 박태원의 월북 후 행적이 상세히 알려진 적이 없다는 점 등을 박태원 선택의 우연적 조건으로 이해할 수 있다. 1970년대는 박태원 연구사에서 공백지대로 남아 있지만,『소설가 구보 씨의 일일』은 이를 작품의 형식으로 대신 메꾸고 있다. 최인훈은『소설가 구보 씨의 일일』의 미학적 가치와 형식적 특징에서 비롯되는 장점을 포착해 냄으로써 이 작품이 문학사적 중요성을 획득하는 데도 일정 정도의 역할을 했다. 이후 구보는 여러 작가들에 의해 다양한 방식으로 호명되었던바, 최인훈은 구보를 주어로 하는 글쓰기가 반복과 확장이 가능한 형식이었음을 맨 먼저 입증해 보인 작가이기도 했다.

영문 초록

This paper aims at investigating the literary-historical context in which A Day of Gubo, the Novelist(『소설가 구보씨의 일일』) by Choi In-hun were placed. Borrowing the writing style of “A Day of Gubo, the Novelist”(『소설가 구보씨의 일일』) by Park, Tae-won, Choi had wrote a series of short stories, which were collected and published in a book A Day of Gubo, the Novelist. As known Bak went to North Korea right after the Korean War broke out. The works of the writers including Park, Tae-won who went to North Korea, had been prohibited to publish until mid-1980’s. They had been almost impossible to deal with even academically. So it could have been a politically sensitive issue that Choi imitated in the 1970’s not only the Bak’s literary style but also the very title of his work. Why did Choi write A Day of Gubo, the Novelist in the 1970’s? Did he have some intention of writing it? Choi’s autobiographical novel Hwadu(『화두』) is helpful to answer them. It tells us an episode when Choi wrote A Day of Gubo, the Novelist. According to Hwadu the reasons why Choi wrote it are these：need for a literary model, intention of reconstructing Korean literary history torn apart, feeling similar to Park, Tae-won, fascinated by the writing style of “A Day of Gubo, the Novelist.” Choi could not have begun or finished a series of A Day of Gubo, the Novelist if “A Day of Gubo, the Novelist” had been concealed, Bak had been classified into the radical leftist, or the works of Bak written in North Korea had been known. These are coincidental condition in which Choi could write A Day of Gubo, the Novelist. Most of litterarteurs, critic and scholars had not dealt with Park, Tae-won since the Korean War, but Choi did it. Choi found aesthetic value of “A Day of Gubo, the Novelist”, imitated it’s unique style, and helped it be one of the most important work in the Korean literary history. Choi also proved that it’s style could be re-written and modified to various genres through his own series novel A Day of Gubo, the novelist.
