국문 초록

본 논문은 박태원의 대표적 창작 방법으로 알려진 ‘고현학’과 ‘산책자’개념을 비교문학적 관점에서 비판적으로 고찰하는 것을 목표로 한다. 박태원은 1930년대 한국 모더니즘 문학을 대표하는 작가로 잘 알려져 있고,‘고현학’과 ‘산책자’는 그의 모더니즘 미학의 특성을 대변하는 방법론으로 간주되어 왔다. 그렇지만 ‘모더니즘’, ‘고현학’, ‘산책자’ 등의 문학 개념은 모두 제국의 중심도시인 메트로폴리스를 기반으로 발생한 것으로, 제3세계 식민도시 경성의 문학 작품을 충분히 설명하지 못한다는 한계가 있다. ‘산책자’ 개념을 처음으로 제시한 사람은 벤야민이었다. 그는 보들레르의 시를 분석하며 처음으로 이 용어를 사용했는데, ‘산책자’의 본래적 개념에는 ‘댄디’, ‘부르주아’, ‘백인 남성’ 등의 함의가 들어있었으며, 자본주의에 의해 발생한 ‘소비도시적 공간’(아케이드 등)과 밀접한 관련이 있다. 그로 인해, 일부의 학자들은 ‘여성 산책자’, ‘우울한 산책자’, ‘식민도시의 토착인 산책자’ 등의 파생 개념을 사용하기도 했다. 우리도 식민도시 경성을 주무대로 하는 박태원 문학에 적용할 수 있도록 ‘산책자’ 개념을 정교화할 필요가 있다. ‘식민도시의 산책자’는 일반적인 ‘산책자’와는 달리, 도시 공간을 자유롭게 이동하지 못하며 식민자의 공간을 시각적으로 충분히 재현해내지 못한다. 또한 식민도시 경성의 텍스트에는 메트로폴리스 동경에 대한 강한 지향성이 드러나게 된다. ‘고현학’은 일본의 민속학자이자 건축가였던 곤 와지로에 의해 제안된 개념이었다. 그는 일본과 조선의 민가를 두루 살피며, ‘고현학’의 토대가 되는 민속학적 연구를 실행했다. 그는 고현학을 위해 사진 촬영을 하고 스케치를 그렸으며 다양한 통계 자료를 활용했다. 전통 가옥을 대상으로 한 ‘민속학’과는 달리 ‘고현학’은 1923년 동경대 진재 이후 ‘최첨단 지역’인 긴자(銀座) 거리를 중심으로 급속히 도래한 서구화 경향을 문명적 관점에서 고찰하려는 목적에서 출발했다. 따라서 상대적으로 전근대적인 상태에 머물러 있던 ‘경성’은 고현학을 적용하기에는 그리 적합한 장소가 아니었을 가능성이 높다. 실제로 박태원이 ‘고현학적 방법론’을 처음으로 접한 곳은 동경(東京)이었으며, 그것을 창작 방법에 적극적으로 적용한 작품도 동경을 무대로 한 『반년간』에서였다. 이 작품에는 ‘고현학’에서 찾아볼 수 있는 다양한 통계 자료가 제시되어 있고, 신주쿠와 긴자 등 동경의 신시가지의 거리 풍경이 작가 자신이 그린 삽화를 통해 정밀하게 묘사되어 있다. 이외에도 박태원은 ‘지도’를 활용하여 창작에 임했을 가능성이 있다. 이러한 ‘고현학’의 방법론은 서구 모더니즘보다는 자연주의문학의 ‘과학적 방법론’과 일맥상통하는 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to investigate Park, Tae-won’s main methodologies, ‘Modernology’ and ‘Flaneur’ in korean literary history and comparative studies. Park has been considered as one of the great korean modernist novelist in 1930, and these two methodologies are regarded to indicate his modernist poetics. However, as most of all literary terms and idea including ‘modernism’ and ‘flaneur’ were from Europe, especially from european metropolis, it is not easy to use this literary terms in korean context without exaggeration or distortion. As we know, Walter Benjamin was the first to use the ‘flaneur’ to study in ‘Charles Baudelaire：A Lyric Poet in the Era of High Capitalism’. He insisted “With Baudelaire, Paris for the first time became the subject of lyrical poetry. This poetry is no local folklore; the allegorist’s gaze which falls upon the city is rather the gaze of alienated man. It is the gaze of the flaneur.” However, ‘flaneur’ is close to ‘dandy’, ‘bourgeois’ ‘white male’ and ‘consuming space.’ He never admits the possibility of ‘female flaneur’ or ‘colonial flaneur’ and so on. Therefore some scholars make derivative words of ‘flaneur’ like ‘flaneuse’, ‘flanyor’, ‘native colonial flaneur’. Especially, ‘native colonial flaneur’ can be applicated to colonial Chosun and colonial city Kyungsung. This type of ‘flaneur’ cannot go around easily but be trapped in space. Moreover, some districts cannot be represented well by ‘flaneur’. Kon, Wajiro was a Japanese architect and designer, who was renowned as the father of “modernology”, a branch of sociology which studied the changes in cityscape and people which emerged as a consequence of Tokyo becoming a modern metropolis in the early Showa Era. He used a camera and drew sketch about the cityscape. Park also adopted Kon’s ‘modernology’ to write his novels. However, as the modernology was invented to investigate the aspects of transition in the metropolis Tokyo’s cutting edge district Kinja, Park could not use this methodology in premodern colonial city Kyungsung. Park’s modernology was not shown in Kyungsung text but in Tokyo text, Half a Year. In this novel, statistics and illustrations are adopt to represent modern metropolis Tokyo.
