이 글은 박태원의 「소설가 구보씨의 일일」에 대한 연구 경향과 쟁점을 검토하는 데 목적을 두었다. 발표 당시 외면당했던 소설이었지만 해금 이후 문학사적 위상이 사뭇 달라졌다. 우선, 「소설가 구보씨의 일일」에 집중된 논의는 모더니즘 담론의 운동성에 주목하여 시기별로 세분화할 수 있었다. 해금 이후부터 1990년대 초반까지는 모더니즘 소설임을 확인하고 그 전형을 구축하는 시기였으며, 1990년대 중반부터 후반까지는 모더니즘 소설의 근대성과 연구방법론에 대한 다양한 탐색이 이루어졌던 시기였다. 그리고 2000년 이후는 연구를 심화시키는 가운데 식민지 모더니즘 논의에 힘을 싣고 있는 시기로 볼 수 있다. 전반적으로 「소설가 구보씨의 일일」연구는 모더니즘이론의 흐름에 민감하게 반응하는 경향을 띠었으며, 그만큼 텍스트의 정치한 독법과 연구이론에 대한 천착이 우선적으로 요구되었다. 다음으로, 문학적 영향관계와 창작적 변용에 관련한 논의는 소설 연구보다 진전되지 못한 상황이었다. 구인회 동인들과의 문학적 연계를 고찰하거나 구보형 소설에 논의가 집중되어 있는 등 연구 대상과 관점 전환이 요구되었다. 문학교육에 대한 연구 또한 기존 연구 성과가 교육현장에 반영될 수 있도록 교육제도와의 관련성 속에서 창의적인 담론을 생산해야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to review the trends and key issues of the studies on “One Day of a Novelist Mr. Gubo” written by Park, Tae-won. Studies carried out from the time when the ban on the novel was lifted until the year of 2013 were examined to explore the discussions over the novel as well as its creative motives and transformation. For starters, the discussions on the novel were analyzed for their unique characteristics in three different periods with a focus on the changes in the discourse of modernism. During the first period between the ban on the publication of the novel was removed and the early 1990s, the studies showed the entire process of establishing this novel as a model of modernism novel. During the second period which spans from the mid- to late-1990s, the craze over literary studies on Park, Tae-won’s literary works subsided, showing a phased characteristics of introspection and seeking. Various perspectives on modernity affected the studies on the novel, while discussions based on narratology and other methodologies of study lost momentum. Since 2000, which is the third period, controversies over the previous studies continued while seeking a new direction. Even though arguments over creative methods got more intense, efforts to find any cracks in the existing studies or to shift a perspective were also made. In more detail, 1) subject and others, and the emergence of studies on seeing, 2) changes in text interpretation by focusing on dual city characteristics, and 3) more sophisticated studies on techniques. As novel studies, in general, sensitively reacted to the trend of modernism theories, political reading of the text and inquiries into study theories were required as a priority. In addition, it was necessary to introduce a new paradigm for studying Park, Tae-won’s novels that would not be swayed by a fleeting study discourse. Next, the discussions on creative motives and transformation showed less progress than the studies on the novel. 1) As the studies on effect mostly looked into the literary connection with the Association of the Guin-hoi and literary coterie, it was needed to expand target writers and change study methods. Comparative literature also had a problem of limited targets and viewpoints. 2) Discussions on Gubo-style novels were the focus of the studies on creative transformation, but they did not make an impressive progress in study method. Even though the fact that the Gubo-style texts can be repeatedly changed was considered, it was the time when a shift of a perspective from literature to a culture and an individual yet comprehensive review were needed. 3) Studies on literary education concentrated on teaching methods and media utilization, mostly in graduate schools of education. It is important to speed up the relevant studies to reflect the outcomes from the previous studies into field curriculum.
