국문 초록

체제 전환 이후 급격한 변화를 맞은 폴란드의 어린이 책 출판 상황을 정리하고, 어린이 책에서 큰 자리를 차지하는 그림책의 주된 흐름을 그림책에서 나타나는 어린이 상을 통해 파악하고자 하는 논문이다. 체제 전환 초기인 1990년대에 일어난 주된 변화는 폴란드 어린이 책 출판의 전반적인 몰락으로, 주목할 만한 그림책의 편수가 몇 편 되지 않으며, 어린이 책 상 등에서도 그림책이 제외되어 있는것을 발견할 수 있다. 상황은 폴란드가 안정을 찾기 시작한 2000년대에 조금 나아져, 국제 도서전과 외국 출판사를 통해 폴란드의 그림책들과 작가들이 소개되기 시작되고 있음을 감지할 수 있다. 그러나 얼마 되지 않는 1990년대의 그림책과 2000년 이후의 문학상 수상작 등의 그림책들을 살펴보았을 때, 가장 눈에 띄는 것은 오히려 어린이 주인공의 부재였다. 연구대상으로 선정한 30작품 중 어린이가 아예 등장하지 않는 작품들이 과반수를 차지했으며 체제 전환기 이후의 폴란드 그림책에 나타나 어린이 주인공들은 성별이나 연령대, 성격이나 외모 등 스스로의 정체성을 드러내며 작품 안에서 개인으로 두드러지지 않는 경향을 보였던 것이다. 주인공을 둘러싸고 있는 환경에서 보아도, 그림책의 배경이 되는 많은 장소들 역시 구체적으로 드러나기보다는 이야기의 진행에 따른 분위기를 나타내기 위해 쓰이고 있는 경우가 많았다. 흥미로운 것은, 체제 전환기 이후 많은 어린이 그림책에서 주인공 인물을 부각시키는 경우가 드문데도 불구하고 가정의 모습은 여러 가지로 제시되고 있다는 점이다. 체제 전환기 이후의 폴란드 그림책에서 어린이 이미지의 놀랄만한 부재는 어떤 원인에서 기인하는 것일까? 2000년대 이후로 출간되고 있는 그림책의 경향이 시각적인 충격과 이미지의 실험, 타이포그래피 와 편집 디자인의 새 가능성 탐구에 집중되고 있는 것은, 폴란드 그래픽이 자체적으로 가지고 있는 강한 디자인적 전통도 있겠으나, 체제 전환기 이후의 폴란드 사회의 혼돈 속에 어린이 주인공의 모습을 규정지을 수 없는 작가들의 혼란을 그 이유로 추측해본다.

영문 초록

The huge change which Polish culture scene has faced upon Polish society and culture since 1989 has been offered diverse themes to study, yet the change and the development of Polish children's picturebook still remain to be researched. To understand Polish children's picturebook since 1989 we have to take consider the very specific conditions which many authors and readers came across. Children's book publishing in Poland went through enormous hardship after the fall of planned economy. The gigantic state-owned publishing houses and ambitious creators of children's book, that had been cherishing the rare chance of ignoring commercial aspect of children's book for almost 40 years collapsed helplessly. Assumingly, the 1990s was a time of slow readjustment for Polish authors, who witnessed how cheap, low quality publications from the West swiftly attracted the taste of the public and almost completely swept over the whole reading market. The real re-start for Polish authors happened after the millenium, so books chosen for studying the image of child in children's picturebook in this paper were mostly published in recent 10-12 years. Proceeding the study, I assumed the image of a child in picturebook somehow would reflect the change of Polish chiden's life or the society after 1989 and was interested how those would be expressed as an art form forchildren. To the image of the child, I set two broad categories - the child and his/her environment. The factors that decide the identity of the child are- gender, age, looks, character etc, and for the environment - time, place, family or friend relationship. The overall result is quite surprising, since of the 30 studied picturebooks, only 12 had the actual child protagonist. Moreover of those 12 picturebooks, only about half picturebooks' protagonists are drawn as a real person with individual characteristics, and the rest of the picturebooks's protagonist simply exist as an anonym child - the child that can be anybody. Does this 'absence of child' in children's picturebook is a specific feature for Polish chidlren's picturebooks after 1989? Then how the creators of those books manage with the composition? Does this phenomenon reflect the changes over children's book world since 1989? Further questions I'd like to challenge for the upcoming paper.
