작명으로 본 유충렬전의 인물 연구

국문 초록

소설을 구성하는 요소 가운데 하나가 인물이다. 한 인물은 다른 인물과 구분되며, 이 구분은 성명으로 가능해진다. 작명은 인물의 성격을 묘사하는 가장 간단한 방법이지만, 각 국가 또는 민족의 특정한 문화와 심리를 반영한다. 『주역(周易)』이라고 불리는 『역경(易經)』은 중세에 유학자들의 필독서인 사서삼경(四書三經)의 하나였던 만큼 궁리진성(窮理盡性)하는 학문과 일상생활의 관습적인 문화에 많은 영향을 주었다. 『주역』의 「계사전」에서 “군자는 거(居)하면 그 상(象)을 보고 그 말을 살펴보며, 동(動)하면 그 변화함을 보고 그 점(占)을 살펴본다. 이 때문에 하늘로부터 도와주어 길(吉)하며 이롭지 않음이 없다.”고 한다. 『주역』은 “성인(聖人)이 깊음을 다하고 기미를 살피는 것”이다. 변화는 “나아감과 물러감의 상(象)”이다. 점(占)은 “수(數)를 극진히 하여 미래를 아는 것”이다. 『주역』을 통해서 미래를 안다는 것은 자연의 법칙과 변화의 원리에 근거하여 사람이 실천해야 할 진리(眞理)와 도리(道理)를 추구한다는 뜻이다. 그리고 점을 본다는 말은 변화의 조짐을 알고 그 변화에 통하도록 준비하는 방편이라는 뜻이며, 그 변화의 진리와 도리를 실천하면 하늘이 돕고 길(吉)하여 이롭다는 것이 『주역』 점의 의의이다. 작명(作名)은 『주역』 점의 원리를 응용한 관습적인 문화의 하나이다. 〈유충렬전〉에서 작가는 주인공의 성명을 작명한 의도를 구체적으로 서술하고 있다. 그리고 작명 의도가 인물의 성격을 창조하고 작품의 주제를 형성하는 데 작용한다. 이 연구의 목적은 고소설의 창작이 성명의 획수와 수리를 활용하여 구성한 『주역』의 괘와 어떤 관계가 있는지를 밝히는 데 있다.

영문 초록

This study is designed to illuminate relationships between a character’s personality in Korean ancient novels and his name that reflects his behavior based on its trigram from the Book of Changes. The author of the Story of Yuchungryeol named the main character Yu chungryeol in expectation of his successful life as a subjugator of the whole country with his loyalty and passion. In the interpretation of the name, Yuchungryeol, in terms of its trigram from the Book of Changes, it implies that he will overcome dangerous situations and stabilize the subjects’ livelihood by doing right things in an honorable way. On the other hand, in the interpretation of the name, Jeonghandam, in terms of its trigram from the Book of Changes, it connotes that being upright is advantageous and it is necessary for him to tap people’s opinions. Yuchungryeol is a character who actualizes his courtesy, the reason, and right things, and the theme of the story is that the stabilization of the people´s livelihood should be maintained by distinguishing social classes. Yuchungryeol and Jeonghandam are in an antagonistic relationship because of their different desire. Yuchungryeol’s desire is to revenge his father on Jeong handam who slanders his father. Yuchungryeol pursues the standards that are connoted in his name, whereas Jeonghandam does not so. Yuchungryeol achieves his desire to avenge his father, receiving wealth and honor. Jeonghandam, however, temporarily achieves his desire to become a king, but ruins both himself and his family and is eventually killed by his subjects. This structure of the story is construed as a reflection of culture that characters in Korean ancient novels are named after the author’s expectations, and they are expected to achieve what their name implies.
